PGL Major Stockholm viewer’s guide

Date:

The first Counter-Strike Major in over two years, PGL Major Stockholm, will take place in Sweden’s capital on October 26 – November 7 with a total of 24 teams competing for one of the largest prize pools in the game’s history.

The event will feature 18 of the 20 highest-ranked teams in the world — including Natus Vincere, G2, and Astralis —, and the playoffs will be played in the Avicii Arena in front of a live audience.

The Champions stage will be played in from of a crowd in Stockholm

PGL Major Stockholm is split into three parts: the Challengers, Legends, and Champions stages. In the first one (October 26 – 29), previously known as the Main Qualifier, 16 teams will compete in a Swiss system format where the eight best teams will advance to the second stage. Underdogs such as TYLOO, Renegades, and Sharks will be playing in the Challengers stage, but so will some big names such as Astralis, Virtus.pro, and FaZe that didn’t live up to their status in the Major-qualifying cycle.

The Legends stage follows (October 30 – November 2), where eight teams that accumulated the most points qualifying for the Major will join the eight ones advancing from the Challengers stage, setting up another 16-team Swiss group. Natus Vincere, G2, and Liquid will start their tournaments at this point, and again, the eight best teams will advance further.

Biggest takeaways from lineups submitted for PGL Major

In the Swiss system, each team has to win three games to advance or lose three games to be eliminated. Matchups for each round are drawn shortly after the previous one is concluded, and teams with the same win-loss record are paired in every round. At the PGL Major, BO1 matches will be used for the initial games, until elimination or promotion games are reached — those will be BO3.

Finally, the playoffs will take place in the Avicii Arena on November 4-7, following a one-day tournament break. Eight teams will fight their way to the Major title through a single-elimination bracket, concluding with a BO3 grand final on Sunday, November 7 at 20:00 . All playoff matches will be played in front of a crowd, while the Challengers and Legends stages will take place in a studio environment.
