Overwatch 2 developers detail changing environments that will be used in the game’s maps

Overwatch 2 is going to implement a lot of new content when it eventually launches, and a lot of the changes will come in the form of new technology created or implemented into the game’s engine. 

In a new blog post from members of Blizzard Entertainment’s engineering team, three developers broke down one of those new features, Environment States.

Environment States is a new system that the team developed to separate every major component of lighting, sound, and effects into self-contained assets that can then be pieced together to build specific scenarios. These pieces can also be shared, scaled, and used across other maps and environments, opening up the potential for multiple “scenarios” on each map. 

The scenario the developers used was lighting, noting that Environment States let the team prototype new lighting for maps in hours, which helped them quickly experiment, test, and implement more variety for maps.

“After some brainstorming, we decided to allow for several Environment States to be present all at the same time, ordered neatly in a stack,” Blizzard senior software engineer Marco Alamia said. “This stack could change dynamically, so at any given time an Environment State could be added or removed. The magic happens when the engine looks at this stack and blends all the Environment States together to produce the final environment look.”

They also showcased some other options that Environment States allow the team to work on in the most recent deep dive, revealing that certain maps will have dynamic environment and weather changes, such as rain, snow, and sandstorms. 

The devs said “it’s the same as having multiple layers blended together to produce a final image” in Photoshop, using each Environment State to hold an individual aspect of the environment itself. 

Changing one Environment State only alters aspects of that individual value and can be used to test small variations or change the entire feel of a level without needing to alter too many elements. 

“By changing its parameters, we can drive the fog look and feel, which in turn allows the art team to make the environment evolve visually based on the game mode, players’ positions, or even time,” Alamia said. “For example, we could make the map spookier for Halloween, or have the fog become thick only around a specific area of a map, or make a sandstorm build over time in one of our new Hero Missions.”

LNG grab hard-fought victory over winless TT in 2021 LPL Summer Split

LNG picked up the win in a surprisingly balanced series against TT today in the third week of the 2021 LPL Summer Split.

While TT are yet to grab a victory this summer after ending the Spring Split in 13th place, LNG were still undefeated when they came up against TT with a 5-0 record. For this reason, many League of Legends fans expected to watch a one-sided series ending with a clean 2-0 score. But TT proved them wrong.

After losing the first game due to various gold leads that LNG found both in lane and from the neutral objectives, TT entered the second game with a clear plan of action. Jungler Xiaopeng’s Lee Sin offered an opportunity to TT’s solo laners to snowball with successful ganks that offered him six kills before the nine-minute mark. Although Langx’s Gnar had a weak matchup against Ale’s Lucian in the top lane, he was focused down all game and couldn’t have an impact, being caught out several times by TT’s assassins.

While LNG boast flawless teamfights and skirmishes, as well as strong Baron control and mid-game presence with the second-highest gold lead at 25 minutes, the team’s stats reveal average numbers during the early game. TT played around this weakness to tie the series. They adjusted their strategy in the last game, however, by picking Lulu mid and Braum as support to focus on enabling the first Rek’Sai of the split to dominate. TT abandoned their fast-paced playstyle and went through a slow early game.

This strategy almost worked out. LNG solely focused on punishing TT’s mistakes and this allowed them to get the lead. The team grabbed first blood by catching Patch’s Braum in the river at over 10 minutes and then secured more objectives than TT to open the way to their Nexus.

Although LNG dominated the mid game, TT came back after 30 minutes and each team grabbed successive leads after bloody teamfights around the Rift. It was balanced until the very last teamfight when LNG’s top laner Ale turned the tide of the game with a risky teleport to flank the team in their base and pick off SamD’s Ezreal. Thanks to this play, LNG grabbed the victory in this series.

LNG (6-0) are looking strong at the start of the Summer Split. They’ve defeated top-tier squads like defending LPL champions RNG and spring playoff team FPX to maintain a perfect record so far.

LNG will have a chance to extend their winning streak to seven when they face off against Invictus Gaming next Sunday, June 27, at 4am CT. TT, on the other hand, will play V5 on June 25 at 4am CT. They’re another winless team, so after that series, one of them will grab their first victory of the split.

Here are the VALORANT Patch 3.0 notes

VALORANT Patch 3.0 is set to go live today, introducing one of the most significant updates in the game’s history. Almost every agent will receive adjustments to the cost of their abilities and several weapons will become more affordable. Players will also notice an adjustment to the running accuracy of weapons, which should prevent players from getting undeserved run-and-gun kills.

Patch 3.0 also introduces KAY/O, the deadly robot capable of suppressing enemy abilities and forcing players to rely on pure gun skill. In addition, players can expect a few updates to the competitive playlist, several bug fixes, and performance updates.

Here are the notes and updates for VALORANT Patch 3.0.

Massive agent changes

Patch 3.0 introduces significant updates to every agent that will affect how players prepare for each round. Each agent’s signature ability now only provides one charge per round, instead of accumulating throughout multiple rounds. Any charges received from cooldowns are also temporary. 

Players can also expect flashes to be less annoying since visibility will return faster during the fadeout period for all flashes. 

Astra’s Nova Pulse and Gravity Well abilities received an increased cooldown time from 12 to 25 seconds. Stars are also inactive when placed during the buy phase and take 1.4 seconds to charge before they’re usable. 

She can also now see the Spike while in Astral form, but the Spike isn’t animated and won’t provide additional information. Astra’s Recall cooldown time increased from eight to 15 seconds and her granted signature charges decreased to one. Her Stars now only cost 150 instead of 200, however. 

Breach’s Flashpoint ability is now limited to two charges and costs 250 instead of 200. The projectile speed was also reduced from 2,500 to 2,000. His Fault Line ability received a buff and now takes less time to charge and affects a wider range. It does take longer to cool down between uses, but it still concusses enemies for a longer period. 

His After Shock ability now explodes three times and deals 60 damage per blast. In addition, the explosion radius was increased and the ability now costs 200 credits. The width of his Rolling Thunder explosion was also increased to 2,300.

Brimstone. Cypher, Killjoy, Phoenix, and Reyna received minor changes. Brimstone’s Incendiary now costs 250 credits and Cypher’s Neural Theft ability only requires six ultimate points instead of seven. Killjoy’s Alarmbot and Turret now have a cooldown time of 20 seconds. Phoenix’s Curveball and Reyna’s Leer abilities both increased in price to 250 credits.

Jett’s Updraft and Cloudburst abilities increased in price and her Bladestorm now costs seven ultimate points. She can also no longer break Cypher’s Trapwire with her Tailwind ability. 

Omen’s Paranoia ability decreased to 300 credits, but he now only starts with one Dark Cover ability. He must purchase the second smoke for 100 and the cooldown between smokes was increased to 40 seconds. His Shrouded Step ability also costs 150 instead of 100. 

Raze received a slight model update and her Boombot doubled in price to 400 credits. Her Showstopper ability also requires eight ultimate points instead of seven. Sage’s Slow Orb and Barrier Orb increased in price and her Resurrection ability requires eight ultimate points. 

Skye’s Trailblazer ability was buffed, but it also increased in price from 200 to 250. Her guiding light ability lost one charge and is now replenished on a 40-second cooldown. She also doesn’t need to re-equip her flash to trigger another flash and the ability increased in price to 250. 

Sova’s Shock Dart is now more expensive and his Recon Bolt’s cooldown time increased by five seconds. His Owl Drone also now costs 400 credits and his Hunter’s Fury ultimate requires an extra ultimate point. 

Viper’s Snakebite’s duration decreased by a second and a half and the outer edges now form faster to deal lethal damage to any player stuck in the ability for its entire duration. But the ability also costs an extra 100 credits. 

Yoru’s Blindside ability costs an extra 50 credits and his Gatecrash ability has an extra five seconds of cooldown.

Weapon adjustments

All VALORANT weapons received a bullet tagging adjustment that changed from 75 percent to 72.5 percent, meaning players should feel slightly less of a slowing effect when hit. All weapon dead zones also changed from 30 percent to 27.5 percent and players will be less accurate sooner in response to their movement. 

In addition, each weapon type received changes to nerf the run-and-gun playstyle. The Shorty, Bucky, Stinger, Marshal, and Operator are now cheaper, meaning players can purchase them more often. 

Competitive changes and performance updates

Patch 3.0 also introduced changes to improve the competitive playlist. Old accounts are now less likely to feel “hard stuck,” and if a player improves, their rank should adjust accordingly regardless of how old the account is. 

Matchmaking is also more balanced across all ranks, creating a smoother climbing process and reducing how hard players swing up and down in rank. Individual performance will be considered for improved matchmaking at Immortal rank and higher. 

Close matches will have less of an impact on rank rating gains and losses and the rank rating curves have been adjusted, so climbing or falling through ranks should feel “less volatile.” Ranked placements were also raised to Diamond One, making it easier for high-ranked players to climb back to their original ranks.

Players with medium to high spec machines might see up to a six-percent performance improvement due to several gameplay improvements. You can also now hover over your friends to quickly see their account level, Riot ID, friend note, player card, and more. 

The kill feed has been adjusted too to provide more information about each kill, players who assisted with the kill, and if they were in a second-life state like Phoenix’s ultimate. 

Progression updates and bug fixes

There are a few new ways for players to progress in VALORANT. The new Year One Event Pass allows players to earn free items similar to a battle pass and will be active throughout Patch 3.0. Players queuing with friends will receive a squad boost based on the size of their party, also active through Patch 3.0.

A new account leveling feature introduces a numerical level based on the amount of time you play. You’ll be automatically boosted to a certain level based on how many games you’ve played before Patch 3.0.

Stockholm reportedly remains a priority for the CS:GO Major

The organizers of the PGL Major Stockholm, which will be the first CS:GO Major since StarLadder Berlin in September 2019, are still commited to hosting the competition in Stockholm, Sweden, according to a report by HLTV.

There has been concerns over the last days whether Stockholm is prepared to host a prestigious live event such as the Major, especially after Valve, CS:GO and Dota 2 developer, revealed that it is considering alternative locations for The International 10. The news follows a vote by the Swedish government and the Swedish Sports Federation not to accept esports into the Sports Federation.

Sources told HLTV that plans to hold the 2021 CS:GO Major in Stockholm have not been affected by this impasse between the Swedish authorities and the organizers of TI10. PGL, who organized several Counter-Strike tournaments in the past, including the PGL Major Kraków in 2017, is committed to hosting the Major in the Swedish capital for the first time.

Since TI10 was postponed in April 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, Valve has been working with Swedish officials to organize a safe and successful event for Dota 2‘s biggest championship return. Swedish groups like Stockholm Live and Visit Stockholm assured Valve that TI10 would qualify for similar conditions that elite sporting events received.

But Valve’s request to have TI10 reclassified as an elite sporting event ended up declined by the Swedish Minister of the Interior. Without the official green light from Swedish authorities, Valve said that players, talent, and staff would likely get their visa to enter the country denied due to international travel restrictions that are still in place because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We have started looking for possible alternatives elsewhere in Europe to host the event this year, in case the Swedish government is unable to accommodate The International – Dota 2 Championships as planned,” Valve said yesterday. TI10 is scheduled to be played in the Aviici Arena, which is the same venue PGL intends to host the CS:GO Major.

TI10 remains scheduled for August 5 to 15 with more than a $40 million prize pool. The PGL Major Stockholm, on the other hand, is set to take place from October 23 to November 7, with only the playoffs held in front of a live crowd. ESL was supposed to host a Major in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2020, but the plans were scrapped due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The PGL Stockholm Major will feature a $2 million prize pool up for grabs, which is a record prize pool for Valve-sponsored tournaments.
