Overcoming Miniature Painter’s Block #SciFiSunday

Date:

I really enjoyed this 52 Miniatures video where Alex talks about a 2 year painter’s block he had over his Stargrave warband. As a miniature painter myself, I can relate a lot of this.

I love some of the ideas he puts forth for overcoming such a block, like looking in art or other illustrated books for color scheme inspiration. For one of his minis, he ends up choosing an illustration with a color scheme that has nothing whatsoever to do with sci-fi, but it totally worked.

One of the things that caused his block was that he really wanted to do something special with his warband. One of the cool things about Stargrave is that you can use any miniatures you wish and you’re encouraged to create backstories for your characters. While fun, this can also be intimidating to come up with something that feels real and has suitable depth for ten different characters.

In Alex’s case, he posted images of his unpainted warband and asked his Patreon subscribers to create the backstories. What they came up with is pretty amazing and Alex reads these character stories as he paints the minis. In many of the cases, their stories inspired the paint scheme.
