Facebook has been rolling out the updates for the Oculus Quest platform, adding new Voice Commands, Multi-User Accounts and App sharing to name a few. According to its roadmap for the platform, it looks like experimental support for a 120Hz refresh mode could be arriving this month.

Existence of the mode was first teased by Andrew Bosworth, Head of Facebook Reality Labs in one of his regular Q&A sessions on Instagram. Now the feature has appeared via Oculus’ developer roadmap, which indicates a ‘medium’ chance of a 120Hz refresh rate appearing in March. This would only apply to the Oculus Quest 2 headset.

120Hz support will initially be made available under the ‘Experimental Features’ section, allowing users to opt-in and toggle the mode for apps that’ll support it. How many developers plan to remains to be seen, as not all apps may be able to. This is purely down to the processing power involved in running Oculus Quest 2’s screens at the higher rate. The feature could also have a dramatic effect on battery life.

Those apps that can run at 120Hz will be able to offer an even smoother gameplay experience over Oculus Quest 2’s original 72Hz mode and the more recent 90Hz support. Native support for the latter arrived in November 2020, with a growing lineup of titles supporting the feature. These now include Down the Rabbit Hole, Superhot VR and Beat Saber.

There’s a good chance Oculus will roll the feature out in March as it continues with monthly updates. Consulting CTO for Oculus, John Carmack previously said the company was ‘striving towards monthly software releases’ and nothing else has been mentioned at the moment. Plus, don’t forget about the Oculus UserVoice channel where you can submit ideas and suggestions whilst voting on others.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of the latest Oculus Quest 2 features, reporting back with further updates.
