These are not the Merry Pranksters from the ’60’s who traveled the country in a psychedelic-painted Volkswagen bus and handed out LSD.
No, these are “evil computer geniuses” who, according to Bloomberg, hacked a blockchain advisor’s cellphone and stole $24 million in cryptocurrency from his account.
The advisor is now suing the (then) 15 year old who allegedly cracked his phone by by bribing or fooling employees of his wireless service. That allowed the teenager and his friends to “intercept authentication messages, gain information and drain the victims’ cryptocurrency accounts.”
The kid admitted his crime to the advisor, claimed that he had done it previously and was hiding millions of dollars of cash in his bedroom.
The young man, now 18, is being sued for $71 million under the federal racketeering statute that permits treble damages.
Digital does not mean safe, for sure.
