Dawnbreaker, a Strength melee carry who shines in the heat of battle, is the latest addition to Dota 2’s ever-growing hero roster! And, well, let’s just say she’s an unexpected addition, although an exciting one nonetheless. If you were hoping we’d get one of the many interesting characters from the recent Dota: Dragon’s Blood anime on Netflix, know that you’re not in the minority.
Still, if history has taught us anything, it is the fact that Valve has its own way of doing things — for better and worse. Then again, we have a brand-new hero to talk about less than four months after Hoodwink’s release, so it’s impossible to complain. If only this sort of release cadence would become the norm, it would breathe new life into the game and reinvigorate its dwindling playerbase. Well, at least one can hope!
In any case, there’s a lot of ground to cover, so let’s begin!
Dota 2 Dawnbreaker | Ability Kit
Dawnbreaker is a pretty simple Strength hero by design, but don’t let that fool you — her abilities pack quite a punch! With an oversized celestial hammer by her side, you can already imagine what wielding it will look like and how big of an impact its blows will have. She looks like a strange mix, perhaps like a compound of Omniknight and League’s Galio, and we’re not only talking about the visual side of things either — her ultimate is pretty much a carbon copy of Galio’s.

Still, she seems fairly straightforward which is definitely a plus — Dota already has its fair share of complex heroes, and sometimes it’s the easy ones that end up being the most exciting to play. Dawnbreaker should be no different in that regard.
Q: “Starbreaker” — Dawnbreaker whirls her hammer three times, damaging enemies around her before smashing it down, stunning and damaging all targets in front of her. A pretty simple ability, all things considered. Great for clearing camps or dishing out damage in the heat of battle.
W: “Celestial Hammer” — Dawnbreaker hurls her hammer at a target, damaging all enemies struck along the way. After a short delay, the hammer will then fly back towards her, leaving a blazing trail that’ll slow all enemies hit. The interesting bit is that Dawnbreaker can recall her hammer at any moment and pull herself towards it so that they meet in the middle.
E: “Luminosity” — After three basic attacks, Dawnbreaker’s next hit will critically strike. This blow will also heal all allies around her for a percentage of the damage dealt.
R: “Solar Guardian” — Dawnbreaker’s ultimate is quite an interesting one. She first creates a pulsing AoE zone around an allied target (global range). All allies that are within the zone will be healed, and any enemies will take damage. After a couple of seconds, Dawnbreaker will soar into the sky and fly over to the target location, dealing additional damage and stunning any enemies hit upon landing. When maxed out, her ultimate will have a 100s cooldown (subject to change with buffs and nerfs, of course), so you’ll be able to “spam” it fairly frequently.
All in all, her abilities seem mighty powerful, but they don’t seem all that cohesive. We’ll reserve judgement until we try her out in a couple of games, but she doesn’t seem like Valve’s finest work (nor close to it, even). Regardless, her simple abilities and skirmish-oriented playstyle will surely cater to a large number of players which, in all fairness, was probably what Valve intended.
Dawnbreaker | Talent Tree
As for her talents, they are as follows:
Level 10: +20 Movement Speed or +8 Strength
Level 15: -20s Solar Guardian Cooldown or +20 Damage
Level 20: +40% Luminosity Crit or 2 Starbreaker charges
Level 25: +1100 Celestial Hammer Cast Range or +200 Solar Guardian Radius
Overall, a nice mix that’ll allow you to empower the specific parts of her kit in accordance to your own playstyle. There’s a bit of utility thrown in as well, and if you’re the kind of player who’s constantly looking to roam and impact the map, then bonus Movement Speed and a shorter ultimate cooldown will surely be of interest!
