New York, New York, it’s a helluva town. You could go and visit without a set reason because there is so much to do and see. New York City Landmarks

• The Statue of Liberty was created in France and sent as a gift to the American people. Constructed in 1886 by French sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, it was shipped across the Atlantic in 350 separate pieces. In total, it took four months to put back together.

• In 1904, the New York Times Newspaper moved its headquarters to Longacre Square. Today, the area is commonly referred to as Times Square.

• The Empire State Building gets hit by lightning at least twenty-three times each year.

• Built in 1869, the Brooklyn Bridge is older than London’s Tower Bridge. It took fourteen years to build and twenty-one people died during construction.

• The subway system in New York City is considered to be the largest in the world.

• The first pizza was made in the heart of Little Italy back in 1905. Born in Naples Italy, Gennaro Lombardi established Lombardi’s Pizza and it’s still serving pizza today. 

• A number of mainstream food dishes were initially created in NYC; Chicken and waffles, hotdogs, red velvet cake, and eggs benedict are NYC originals. Depending on the location, a permit to sell hotdogs streetside can cost as much as two hundred thousand dollars a year.

• In the early 19th century, Manhattan was known for its oysters. Unfortunately, due to pollution and overharvesting, New York’s oyster beds have been destroyed.

• The first gay pride parade took place in multiple cities across the US, on June 28th, 1970. In NYC, the parade covered fifty-one blocks to Central Park.

• The New York Public Library contains over fifty million books.
