We have updates for our current enrollment options and our continued support available for schools and students impacted by Hurricane Helene.

See all the details below, and please forward this e-lert to any stakeholders who may need it. They can subscribe to the e-lert here.

Current Enrollment Options

While our fall open enrollment period has ended, options are still available to support students. These options will be especially helpful for students who are unable to return to the classroom following Hurricane Helene.

Transfers – We accept transfer students after regular enrollment has ended. Transfer students should be enrolled in the class at the face-to-face school and have instructional time with a teacher. If a student has a grade to transfer in with, please include that in the transfer request. We will accommodate transfers as long as we have available seats in the course, and most courses have room for new enrollments. Transfers may be an excellent interim solution for displaced students or those facing extended school closures.

Open a ticket with our Virtual Support Center to transfer students. Be sure to include the following in your ticket:

  • student’s name
  • PowerSchool ID#
  • school name
  • transfer grade
  • course needed
  • any student details that can help the NCVPS teacher

You can attach a spreadsheet with those details if you have multiple students. If you need additional funding, you can apply for NCVPS reserve funds.

Normally, transfer options remain open until midterms, but we are extending this for schools and students impacted by the hurricane.

Co-teaching – You can add students throughout the semester to our co-teaching OCS and intervention courses. However, you can only add to existing sections. We can’t open new sections at this point.

PE/Health – Our second session health and PE courses are still open for registration.

Emergency Requests – We understand that the hurricane disrupted regular operations for many schools, and each school has special circumstances. Contact our Virtual Support Center for help.

Partnership Courses – In this program, we provide the online course and all the technology for the course, and the local school or district provides the teacher. This program is a good option for schools with displaced teachers and students. You can continue to add students to your partnership courses throughout the semester.

Support for Schools and Students

Impacted by Hurricane Helene

Our first priority continues to ensure the safety and well-being of our staff, students, and partners in the affected regions. We are still assessing the situation. Many of our team members and students still face power outages, communication challenges, and severe disruptions. In response, we have developed contingency plans to support students and staff during recovery.

Here’s how NCVPS is assisting:

Instructional Continuity: We are preparing for potential extended closures, particularly in districts most affected by the storm. Drawing from our experience with Hurricane Florence, we evaluated flexible options for students and teachers to ensure minimal disruption to learning. We are also working on strategies to provide additional instructional coverage where needed.

Flexibility for Impacted Students: We have directed NCVPS instructors to show maximum flexibility with deadlines and assignments for students impacted by the hurricane. We understand that many students are going through a challenging time, and we aim to reduce any additional stress related to their coursework.

Please let impacted students know that our teachers do not expect them to continue working on their NCVPS courses while their local school is closed due to storm damage. Their safety and well-being are the most important things, and our teachers understand that schoolwork may not be your top priority. However, if students feel up to it and would like to keep working on their assignments, they are more than welcome to do so. Our teachers are available to help, so students shouldn’t hesitate to reach out if they need support or have any questions.

Monitoring and Communication: Our team continues to monitor the situation through state and local channels. As we gather more details from emergency services and local reports, we will refine our support strategies and communicate further with you.

At the first opportunity, schools should contact their students’ NCVPS teachers. Enrollment reports and grade reports have our teachers’ contact information. Please update our teachers on the specific needs of impacted students. For broader, school-wide support or solutions, contact our staff directly at ncvpsinfo@ncpublicschools.gov or submit a help-desk ticket.

Transfer Options: For students who are unable to return to their physical schools due to damage or extended closures, NCVPS offers a seamless option to continue their education online. Schools can transfer these students into NCVPS courses, providing some continuity to their education. Please contact us for assistance in making these transitions as smooth as possible.

Homeschool Options: As with the COVID-19 pandemic, some parents may opt to homeschool their students due to displacement or trauma from the hurricane. You are welcome to transfer them into NCVPS courses, where they can continue their education from anywhere while remaining a member of your school. If parents prefer to homeschool independently, please direct them to our Non-Public page.

Please note, there is a fee for non-public enrollments, as required by state legislation. However, because these are North Carolina public school courses, students can easily transfer back into public schools with full credit for the courses they completed with us.

We sincerely appreciate your ongoing partnership, and we are committed to working closely with all districts and schools to support students during this challenging period. Please do not hesitate to contact us if your students need additional support or flexibility.

Connecting with Parents

As virtual learning has become a part of everyday learning for most families across North Carolina, many parents, guardians, and mentors continue to struggle with how to support their online learners in blended and online classes. To provide resources and strategies for how to support not only our NCVPS students, but all online learners in North Carolina, NCVPS has created two Supporting Online Students (SOS) video courses in Canvas. Both courses are free, open to the public, and do not require login credentials. Please share both links with your educational communities and parent networks.
 Supporting Students – All NC
The first course, Supporting Online Students – All NC, is general in nature and is designed for parents, guardians, and mentors of any student who is participating in a blended or online course or is enrolled in a fully online program regardless of school or grade level.
Supporting Students – NCVPS
The second course, Supporting Online Students – NCVPS, is specific to NCVPS and includes specific examples, demonstrations, and resources for NC Virtual parents, guardians, and mentors.

The image is a digital illustration showing a concept of online and social media engagement. On the left side, a pair of hands is interacting with a smartphone, displaying various social media icons and notifications. The phone screen shows a feed with text, images, and interactions such as likes and comments. To the right of the phone, various social media icons like Twitter, a globe, a camera, and video symbols are connected with dotted lines, indicating the flow of information. On the right side of the image, a diverse group of people stand together, holding different devices like laptops and tablets, representing the online community. Above them are various icons representing communication, education, and engagement, such as speech bubbles, a star, and an envelope. The background is a gradient of light blue, giving the image a modern and connected feel.
NCVPS has a mobile app, and Canvas has two mobile apps and a web portal. What does each one do? We’re glad you asked! Here you go:

NCVPS App: Stay connected with what’s happening at NCVPS. Think of these as “front office” notifications.

Canvas Apps and Web Portal: Connect with a student’s course, see grades, due dates, pacing guides, and message the teacher.

Check out the guide on our Mobile Apps page to see when and where it’s best to use each app or portal.
