Navy arrests two drug smugglers with 104 kg of Kerala Cannabis

June 13, Colombo: Sri Lanka Navy during a special operation carried out Friday at Kusumanthurai beach area in Jaffna has arrested two drug smugglers with 104 kilograms of Kerala Cannabis.

During a routine patrol in the northern seas, naval personnel of Northern Naval Command, had observed some individuals carrying suspicious sacks withdrawn from a dinghy landed ashore.

However, when the naval personnel on patrol reaching to that location, the smugglers in the dinghy had escaped.

Searching the sacks left behind by the suspects, the Navy personnel have found 25 parcels of Kerala cannabis weighing about 57 kg and taken the stock into custody.

Acting immediately, the Navy team had launched a special operation in that sea area in search of the escaped the dinghy and the drug traffickers.

Later, the Navy found the dinghy in Madagal area and two persons were taken into custody.

According to information received from the suspects, the Navy was able to seize another 13 abandoned parcels containing more than 46 kilos of Kerala cannabis.

Accordingly, during the entire operation, the Navy has taken two suspects with over 104 kilograms of Kerala cannabis and a dinghy into custody.
