Monday Must-Play— ‘Shock Troops’

Date:

We’re back with the next entry in Monday Must-Play, our weekly article series that highlights must-play Meta Quest 2 VR games worth checking out. Each week we encourage readers to share their thoughts about the chosen game in our Monday Must-Play Game Club on Facebook as well as across social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and others using the #MondayMustPlay hashtag.

Without Further ado, let’s dig into this week’s Monday Must-Play game of the week: Shock Troops!

Lock and load kids, it’s about to get intense in here. Shock Troops is the latest retro-styled VR rampage from Garage Collective that rips all of your favorite memories of old-school first-person shooters right from your skull and spits them out into your VR headset.

Chunky low-poly environments with pixel art textures? Check. Pixelated enemies and gloriously low-resolution particle effects? Absolutely. You’ll have to keep your head on a swivel though because enemies are coming from all angles in this fast and frenetic shooter that asks the age-old question: “What if monsters from hell invaded space?” That’s what you’re here for, the latest cadet in the Shock Troops.

The seamless blending of classic pixel-art textures with modern lighting and performance results in an amazingly satisfying mission to rid the galaxy of monsters, aliens, and more. Missions are quite lengthy as well with a lot of enemy and level design variety. You’ll unlock new weapons too as you finish levels, which leads to a lot of replayability and hours of gameplay. I was a big fan of the vast, deep space environments. There is a real sense of scale here you wouldn’t see in actual retro shooters from the 90s.

If you’re craving more of the Garage Collective’s work that brings high-resolution pixels and voxel worlds to life in VR, then check out Stones of Harlath, a magical adventure game that puts you in the boots of a battle mage on Quest. Or you can one of the predecessors to Shock Troops, a retro FPS called Theta Legionfor Oculus Rift .

Shock Troops is available now on Quest 2 for $9.99 USD. Don’t forget to join the Meta Must Plays Game Club on Facebook to chat with other VR gamers about the games each week and share your thoughts, screenshots, video clips, and more on social media using the#MondayMustPlay hashtag. For past entries, check out The Twilight Zone, Moss: Book II, and Nock.
