Jesús Luzardo, pitcher for the Oakland Athletics, broke his pinky this week just four hours before a league game. Rather than sit out the game, Luzardo said he felt good enough to play. He gave up six runs on five hits in just three innings, ultimately leading the A’s to lose to the Baltimore Orioles 8-4.

“I’m a 23-year-old kid, I make mistakes,” Luzardo said, per the AP. “I feel like a lot of people don’t realize that we are people as well and we make mistakes, the same mistakes that fans make, the same mistakes that people that work normal jobs make.”

Luzardo said the injury wasn’t the result of anger, but rather a case of bad luck. He raised his arm in reaction to something that happened in-game, and in doing so slammed it into a table to his side. Although his hand swelled up immediately after the injury, it wasn’t immediately clear he had broken any bones. He blamed adrenalin for his decision to start in the MLB game, after which an X-ray revealed a hairline fracture in the pinky finger of his pitching hand.

“It was an immature mistake and it was a stupid mistake. But I still made a mistake and that’s something that I’m going to learn from and I’m not going to do again,” he said.

Luzardo still hasn’t said what game he was playing when he received the injury. He’s now out indefinitely as he recovers, but says he has no plans to stop playing video games.

“I’ve played video games my whole life, this never happened to me,” he said. “I don’t plan on hitting my hand again, maybe I move a little farther away from the table next time.”

This isn’t the first time video games interfered with MLB play. Joel Zumaya had to sit out several games after excessive Guitar Hero playing caused inflammation in his pitching hand in 2006, and the members of the 2018 Boston Red Sox reportedly played so much Fortnite they had to set reminders to feed themselves.
