Michael Findlay Is Onboarded as FCA’s Chair of Markets Practitioner Panel

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has onboarded Michael Findlay as Chairman of the independent Markets Practitioner Panel, effective 1st July 2021.

According to a press release shared with Finance Magnates, Michael Findlay, an executive veteran with three decades of experience, has been named by the FCA, as its new Chairman of its independent Markets Practitioner Panel.

As Findlay takes over the position in the weeks ahead, he will succeed the interim Chairman, Tim Waddell who is also the Vice-Chairman of Global Corporate & Investment Banking for EMEA, BofA Securities.

A Chronicle of Findlay’s Career

Currently, Findlay serves in a number of non-executive positions with different organisations, including the London Stock Exchange PLC, Royal Mail Group PLC, Jarrold & Sons Ltd, Morgan Sindall Group PLC. Additionally, he is the London Stock Exchange’s Chairman and the owner of Fin Capital Ltd, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Prior to these positions, Findlay was a Committee Member for the International Exhibition Co-operative Wine Society for three years.

Earlier to the Wine Society, the Bank of America Merrill Lynch recruited him as its Co-Head of Investment Banking and Corporate Broking, UK and Ireland. From mid-2014 to Autumn 2016, he fulfilled the requirements of the position while he was based in London.

Additionally, at the Bank of America, Findlay was the Co-Head of Corporate Broking EMEA. For almost four years, he served successfully in the role.

At the UK Mail Group PLC, he took on the role of Non-Executive Director for approximately seven years.

Also, Findlay was the Partner and Managing Director at Moelis & Company for twenty months. Further, he became a Non-Executive Director for RSM Tenon in August 2011.

He spent a large part of his career at Merrill Lynch, a total of eleven years and four months. His first post positioned him as a Director where he was effective for more than six years. Then he progressed to Managing Director and Co-Head of Corporate Broking Europe. He stayed in that role for another five years.

From the beginning of 1994 to 1998, Findlay was a Director of Corporate Banking at UBS. His earliest known position began in 1991 when he started as a Research Analyst at Robert Fleming.

Deep Capital Markets and Corporate Experience

Commenting on the announcement, the FCA’s Chairman, Charles Randell said: “Michael brings deep capital markets and corporate experience, with an appreciation of the important role that the Panel plays in ensuring our regulation is targeted and effective. Well-functioning capital markets will remain vital to support the economy as the UK starts to recover from the impact of the pandemic.”

“We will continue to value the robust and constructive challenge of the Panel particularly as we contemplate our approach to the future of regulation and transformation. I know Michael will continue the excellent work of his predecessor and I look forward to working with him in the years ahead. I would like to thank Tim for his contribution as both a member and Chair and especially for steering the Panel throughout the pandemic, allowing it to provide timely input into the FCA’s work,” Randell added.

“With the regulator and industry considering how markets need to adapt to be fit for the future, it is especially important that the FCA can call on the expertise of senior industry practitioners. I look forward to working together with my colleagues on the Panel and drawing on their broad experience of capital markets to help the FCA achieve a balanced regulatory approach whilst upholding the highest standards,” Findlay said.
