Latin America’s largest cryptocurrency exchange Mercado Bitcoin has partnered with environmental advocate MOSS to reduce its carbon emission. Consequently, this makes it the first crypto exchange in the world to pursue this endeavor.
MOSS describes itself as the world’s biggest carbon offset platform. It is arguably the first platform to tokenize tradable carbon credits. According to a press release, MOSS will offset Mercado Bitcoin’s carbon emissions moving forward.
On the other hand, Mercado Bitcoin will list MCO2 on its platform. With this, users will have access to MCO2 token, allowing them to buy tokenized carbon tokens and help MOSS accomplish its vision.
Mercado Bitcoin CEO Reinaldo Rabelo said,
With the partnership with MOSS, Mercado Bitcoin becomes the first cryptocurrency exchange in the world to offset all its carbon footprint.
Currently, MOSS focuses on helping reduce carbon emissions in the Amazon rainforest. Each carbon credit is worth one ton of avoided carbon dioxide (CO2) emission. In certain countries, corporations have to subsidize their greenhouse gas emission standards. Hence, MOSS’ platform.
Meanwhile, Mercado Bitcoin calls itself the largest crypto exchange in Latin America. It has at least 2.2 million users on its platform.
