Following the reveal of its swan song GranTurismo Zéda model last week, Maserati has shown images of a powertrain test mule for one of its upcoming machines. The next generation of cars will come solely in hybrid and full electric forms, paving the way for the future of the Italian marque.
Very few details have been disclosed as of yet, but the images appear to show a mule based around the mid-engined Alfa Romeo 4C, albeit with some rather significant modifications. Though the additional bodywork is likely to be shape-disguising cladding, a wider track and substantial air intakes can be seen both at the front and behind each door.

Current projections point towards the launch of a production version of the Alfieri Concept and a hybrid Ghibli next year, with the replacement for the GranTurismo coming in 2021.
As we’d expect the GranTurismo to come in 2+2 form, and the Alfieri thought to be just around the corner, chances are that this mule is for the production powertrain of the glorious concept we first saw in 2014. The model’s due to be produced on the refurbished GranTurismo line, initially offered in hybrid form, with a full electric variant arriving alongside other EVs in 2022.
The little information that is provided states that this is the very first mule for the brand’s new powertrain, and that it will be developed and built entirely by Maserati. This comes as part of FCA’s £5.1bn investment into electrification and autonomous technologies, with this powertrain set to lead the way for Maserati’s future models.
May 2020 is when we expect to hear more, so keep an eye on the streets of Modena until then…
