Lynx Unveils a Redesigned R1 Headset, Full Specs Released

Date:

Back in February French startup Lynx announced its first product, a headset capable of both virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) content called the Lynx-R1. Recently, the company revealed a new design, more specs and a more solid timeline for release.

Lynx-R1

As you can see from the images the redesigned Lynx-R1 offers a sleeker, more compact design than the one previously shown, all based around its 4-fold catadioptric freeform prism. The pictures showcase the headset in its VR and AR forms, with and without the magnetic cowling attached.

With the cowling out of the way users retain their peripheral vision whilst being able to view digital content through the lenses in a similar fashion to other AR/MR devices. In fact, for those developers who already work with Microsoft’s HoloLens, Lynx will support its mixed reality tool kit for easy porting.

Described by Lynx as a more ‘industrial design’, it still houses the battery and other components on the back of your head for even weight distribution and comfort. As inter-pupillary distance (IPD) is always a hot topic, the Lynx-R1 features mechanical adjustment with a range of 56-70mm which covers a wide variety of users.

When it comes to delivery Lynx founder Stan Larroque said in a recent YouTube progress report that developer kits would be available in mid-August while mass production will begin in September to fulfil the first batch of pre-orders, shipping at the end of the month.

The Lynx-R1 headset retails for $1,499 USD with customers able to pre-order the device with a $150 deposit. For further updates from Lynx, keep reading VRFocus.
