Lufthansa Group to focus on leisure destinations this summer.

Date:

The Lufthansa Group, which includes airlines such as Swiss, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines and Lufthansa, amongst others, will be focusing on its leisure network this summer, as indicators show it will be one of the first sectors to recover from the catastrophic effects caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. After months of forced lockdowns and strict quarantine measures, the mass vaccination which is taking place across Europe will presumably reopen the possibility of leisure travel to many citizens, boosting the demand for holiday and sun destinations.

The Lufthansa Group has indeed taken advantage of this situation, and most of its airlines have already announced a summer program with a heavy backbone of flights to leisure destinations. In a press release, the Lufthansa Group announced that they would be offering up to 33 new holiday destinations from Frankfurt and Munich, with a special focus on destinations to the Canary Islands, the Caribbean and Greece.

Specifically, the European airline group announced that it may launch services from Frankfurt Airport (FRA) to the likes of Rijeka in Croatia, Lamezia Terme in Italy as well as Djerba in Tunisia, Varna in Bulgaria and the city of Paphos in Cyprus. Likewise, destinations like Jerez in Spain and Greek cities like Chania, Mykonos, Kos, Zakynzos and Preveza could be added from Munich.

In a statement seen by AeroNewsX, Harry Hohmeister, a member of the Executive Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG said, “Our leisure travel program for summer 2021 is stronger than ever. We expect many countries to relax travel restrictions towards the summer as more and more people have been vaccinated. We know that demand will increase sharply as soon as travel restrictions are removed – and we are well equipped to meet this with our excellent range of products and offers. There is a great yearning for travel and we believe that the summer months will reflect this”

Counterpart Austrian Airlines also expects to offer a network with a heavy presence of Mediterranean destinations, subject to future changes to adapt to the pandemic’s evolution. Meanwhile, Belgium’s flag carrier, Brussels Airlines is also expected to resume flights to several Mediterranean destinations in the upcoming months, focusing on tourism hotspots in Spain, Portugal and Greece. Furthermore, the Belgian carrier is expected to resume flights to North America in the upcoming summer season, after having been cancelled in March 2020.

Additionally, the Lufthansa Group will also be launching a new “leisure travel-focused airline” this year, which will operate under the branding of Eurowings Discover. The new leisure carrier will offer long-haul flights from Frankfurt to holiday destinations in the Indian Ocean, Africa, the Caribbean and even a three times weekly flight to Anchorage, Alaska, in the United States.
