Lufthansa Cargo receives two Boeing 777 freighters; announces MD-11F retirement

Following the delivery and introduction of two new Boeing 777 freighters to Lufthansa’s cargo division. Lufthansa Cargo has announced the retirement of its last remaining McDonnell Douglas MD-11 freighter after more than 23 years of service. The two new Boeing 777Fs registered as D-ALFJ and D-ALFK will operate from the airline’s main cargo hub at Frankfurt Airport (FRA).

One of the Boeing 777 freighters, registered D-ALFK, is in fact a brand new Boeing 777F and was painted in the Lufthansa Cargo livery by Boeing before delivery. While the other Boeing 777F, now registered D-ALFJ, was acquired from Emirates Cargo and was delivered to Lufthansa in an all-white livery with special decals.

In a company statement seen by AeroNewsX, the Chief Executive of Lufthansa Cargo, Dorothea von Boxberg said “We are very pleased that we can offer our customers the capacity of a total of fifteen highly efficient wide-body freighters.

Together with the belly capabilities of Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, and Eurowings Discover now coming back into the market, they are forming our dense, global network.

Lufthansa initially operated a fleet of 19 MD-11 freighters, but as of today there is only one is left in the cargo airline’s fleet. The aircraft, registered D-ALCC, will operate its final scheduled flights to Cairo, Tel Aviv, Chicago, and New York with the greetings “Farewell” and “Thank you, MD-11” emblazoned on its fuselage.

According to Lufthansa, the carrier’s last remaining MD-11 freighter will make its final landing at Frankfurt Airport (FRA) on the 15th of October 2021. Following the retirement of this particular MD-11F in the coming weeks, Lufthansa Cargo will operate only Boeing 777Fs with a total of 11 Boeing 777F aircraft in its fleet.
