Ledger is providing a new update of its Nano S firmware. This version 2.0.0 will notably bring a redesigned onboarding experience and enable the validation of deposit contracts for Ethereum 2.0 via third-party services.

The Ledger Nano S firmware version 2.0.0 is now available! The update improves the overall user experience starting with the device setup.

A redesigned and simplified onboarding

To help newcomers start off on the right foot, this update brings about a new onboarding flow. With the objective of doubling down on product and security understanding. Version 2.0.0, underlines and simplifies the crucial step of writing down the 24-word recovery phrase, which is your only backup in case of theft or loss of your device. (Yes, we know you know, but we can never say it enough, never give your 24 words to anyone!) 

It does so by including additional screens before and after the recovery phrase display and confirmation. The 24 words confirmation is also simplified and shortened. It now consists of a choice among 4 words for each of the 24 words of the recovery phrase. It’s no longer necessary to search each of the 24 words one by one to confirm it.

Control Center feature and ETH 2.0 support

In the wake of Ledger’s Nano X, this Ledger Nano S update brings new features and improvements. The Control Center feature of the Nano X is ported to the Nano S. 

By pressing and holding both buttons on your Ledger Nano S, you can now reach the Control Center. Here you can perform different functions directly from your device, like accessing the settings, locking your device or deleting applications directly on the device.

Following the recent Ledger Nano X release, this Nano S new firmware version 2.0.0 now also supports the seed derivation algorithm EIP2333. This cryptographic functionality will allow you to securely sign a deposit contract transaction for Ethereum 2.0 directly on your Nano S.

A better user experience

Providing an easier, more secure and enjoyable experience is our north star. Therefore, this new update of the Nano S firmware supports several UX and UI improvements.

To facilitate the application download process, we have included a progress bar that will be displayed on the device screen. 

Moreover, the PIN Lock and screensaver activation timings can now be separately set in the security settings. To be able to adjust this setting, go to settings by holding both buttons, then Security > PIN lock or Screensaver, depending on what you want to adjust. By default, both timings are set at the same value as before, but you can change them as per your convenience.

Due to the various improvements that this update brings (onboarding, algorithm, UX,…), the operating system’s size has expanded. However, to offset this increase, we have reduced the size of the majority of coin applications.
