LEC Power Rankings: 2023 Winter Split Week 2

Date:

The LEC 2023 season is finally starting after Rogue surprised everyone and swept G2 in the 2022 Summer Finals. Two new teams have joined or merged into the LEC and there is a brand new format that should shake things up. It will certainly make things interesting and will make doing Power Rankings a bit different. That being said, here are the LEC 2022 Winter Split Week 2 Power Rankings.

Note: With the new structure of the LEC teams that are knocked out will be no longer included in the Power Rankings for obvious reasons. Once they do play again, their “Last Week” rank will be whatever rank they were in their last Power Rankings.

10. AST

(Last Week: 7)

It was a less-than-stellar debut for this Astralis team. They are better than this but is it just that all of the new teams and players are better than everyone thought? Regardless, Astralis did not set themselves up to make the Winter Best of Threes and will have to have a better Week 2. There is a lot less room for error in this new format and someone will have to step up for this team to not miss the playoffs.

9. SK Gaming

(Last Week: 9)

It was not a bad start to the season for SK Gaming but even their win over Heretics felt a bit lucky. They do not have really much wiggle room as it feels like either Markoon plays nearly perfectly or this team struggles. Exakick and Doss will have to mature real quickly for this team to find a lane to play around. If not then they, like Astralis, will be on the outside looking in.

8. BDS

(Last Week: 10)

Is this the gatekeeping team of the LEC? Are they unable to beat the top-level teams but wreck everyone else? That is yet to be seen but the progress this roster made in one week is impressive. Sheo, nuc and Crownie in particular looked better than many people would have anticipated. Adam still has some champ pool questions but those can be fixed. BDS are looking to show that their floor may be much higher than anticipated.

7. HER

(Last Week: 8)

All of the bad things said by anyone at TGH about Ruby were clearly wrong. This Heretics team may actually be a pretty strong squad. The core of Jankos, Ruby and Jackspektra had a good first week. There were the normal jitters and rookie mistakes but, if Ruby in particular can build off his very good first week, then this will be a team to watch.

6. XL

(Last Week: 4)

Only Fnatic had a tougher first week. XL lost to KOI and G2 who both look to be at the top of the league. That is fine to start for XL as they will have a much easier schedule the next two weeks. The problem is that Xerxe is looking more like LCS Xerxe, than UoL, Splyce and Origen Xerxe. He has to step up and amplify his laners as it feels like he is the main cause for a lot of the team’s issues. Xerxe is a veteran and a big brain, he will figure it out, but time is not on his side.

5. MAD

(Last Week: 6)

It feels bad putting MAD here when they are 2-1 but, they had one of the easier schedules and only did what was expected. They took down teams below them in SK and Astralis but lost to Vitality. While Vitality are good, MAD should be at that level. This team can get there but Elyoya will have to be better and they will need to see more of the aggressive version of Carzzy. If they can do that, then this team will climb the rankings quickly.

4. FNC

(Last Week: 5)

Sure Fnatic beat KOI and yes they lost to VIT and G2, but this is about the perfect spot for this team right now. Rekkles did not look great in his return and it really was on Razork and Humanoid to carry this squad. They are going to be fine and got the one win they needed to survive a very hard week 1. Now they can focus on crushing the teams below them and try to finish this split at 7-2 before heading into a fun new format for playoffs.

3. KOI

(Last Week: 1)

The loss to Fnatic was unfortunate but KOI are already looking like they are in good form. Comp in particular is showing why he is the best Bot laner in the West. He is just playing on another level. The team needs to refind that synergy that they showed last year and once they do, they will be nearly unstoppable in a league that is full of good teams.

2. VIT

(Last Week: 3)

Simply put, this team is fun to watch. Perkz was the worst player on the team and they still went 3-0. Photon and Bo exceeded expectations and the bot lane of Neon and Kaiser might be the best in the LCS. This team is going to get their kills and win plenty of fights. As long as they continue to have great communication, this may be the best Vitality roster in the teams history and it’s only be a few games.

1. G2

(Last Week: 2)

Not putting this team at the first position in these LEC Power Rankings last week was just trolling. Scrimbucks were saying that they were crushing everyone and frankly, they might have been undersold even from that. G2 were playing with their food in week 1 and the only not-good team they played was Astralis. All they need to do is wipe out VIT and they will have cemented themselves as the best team in the LEC.
