LA Thieves continue loser’s bracket run with reverse sweep against London

The LA Thieves continue to stay alive at the Call of Duty League Stage 2 Major, defeating the London Royal Ravens 3-2. It was a reverse sweep win for the Thieves, who looked seriously off in the first maps of the series. However, the newly formed roster came together when it mattered and advanced in the loser’s bracket.

After promoting Zack “Drazah” Jordan to the starting roster in place of Austin “SlasheR” Liddicoat, fans weren’t sure what to expect. Although, with two match wins now under their belts, the Thieves might finally have a roster that can compete on a consistent basis.

LA Thieves stay alive at the Stage 2 Major

The beginning of the series looked rough for LA, to say the least. Only Drazah finished with K/D above 1.0 and the Thieves looked out of sorts on Apocalypse Hardpoint.

This trend followed suit in the Search and Destroy, where London took LA by a score of 6-2. Three players on LA finished with below a .60 K/D and the situation looked dire heading into the map three Control.

However, the roster found some semblance of hope when they rattled off some round wins against the Ravens. This may or may not have been aided by TJ “TJHaLy” Haly lagging out after the first round, causing a restart. From there on out, it was all Thieves.

LA defeated London 3-1 in Control, 250-189 in Hardpoint and finally 6-4 in the final Search and Destroy. Like in the match itself, the Thieves needed to come back from a big deficit in the final map. Luckily, with the continued efforts of Drazah, who posted a 1.75 K/D, LA managed to secure the reverse sweep and keep their Major hopes alive for another day.

This loss knocks London out of the Major, while the LA Thieves will play another loser’s bracket match tomorrow Friday, April 9, against the New York Subliners at 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time.

Dota 2: DPC Weekly Recap — SEA Apr 12-17, 2021

ESTNN take a look at DPC SEA’s opening week of games.

The conclusion of Singapore Major meant making changes and regrouping for Dota Pro Circuit Season 2. The SEA regions kicked off their matches in both Upper and Lower brackets. While teams like Fnatic and Neon Esports are yet to show what they have in store for us, week one of DPC was still an exciting bunch of games. Here are some highlights of the matches.

Lower Division

The first set of matches went in South Built Esports’ favour as 496 Gaming lost 2-1 to them. SBE won both games in which they could pick Gyrocopter, completely dominating the game with it.

Games between Cignal Ultra and Motivate.Trust Gaming were straightforward. MG won 2-0, completely dominated the first game with a score of 24-4.

Matches between Team SMG and Galaxy Racer saw SMG winning 2-0. Yeik “MidOne” Nai Zheng was playing the carry role, playing Juggernaut and Monkey King in the first and second game, respectively. While the GXR fought well in the first game, the second game was over under 25-minutes.

Matches between SBE and Army Geniuses was an interesting one. AG picked Gyrocopter in the first two games to keep SBE from picking it. However, the second game went in South Built’s favor with picks like Ursa, Nature’s Prophet and Void Spirit. The third and last game saw significant advantage with SBE, as they picked Gyro and wrapped up the match in a 24-8 win.

The last set of games between Galaxy Racer and South Built Esports ended in the latter’s favor. SBE could win 2-0, with the first match ending in a close 48-minute battle and the second game in 35-7 stomp.

Upper Division

Lilgun and Omega Esports fought each other in the first set of Upper Division games. The first match resulted in an emphatic victory for Omega as they picked Io carry alongside an unorthodox lineup of Beastmaster, Abaddon, Skywrath Mage and Centaur Warruner. Lilgun were quick to comeback and win the second match. However, Omega stepped up in the deciding match to win 2-1 against Lilgun.

Second set of games between TNC Predator and Execration resulted in a 2-0 win for the former. TNC picked Beastmaster mid and Razor as carry against Void Spirit and Troll Warlord of XctN. Both Beastmaster and Razor completely dominated the first game, giving the first win to TNC. The second game was in Execration’s favor, but they gave their advantage in a bad teamfight around the 24-minute mark. TNC kept capitalizing on their opponent’s mistakes and won the second game as well.

BOOM won 2-1 against Execration, with the last game being extremely close between the two teams. BOOM benefited a lot from their Ursa pick, ending the game with a 35-36 scoreline.

Highlight Series: T1 vs Omega Esports

The first match was a neck-to-neck fight in the early game. However, Omega always had the gold advantage in their favor. Although Tiny on T1’s team kept picking off heroes, some terrible fights against Omega acted as a catalyst for T1’s loss. Nuengnara “23savage” Teeramahanon’s Juggernaut was very ineffective in fights with Centaur soaking most of the Omnislash damage. After struggling for about 50-minutes T1 finally called “GG”.

The second game had Omega with an early game gold advantage. Their team kept increasing the advantage, being 9k gold up at the 30-minute mark. However, a fight just around the same time gave a massive advantage to T1 with a much-needed gold swing in their advantage. Omega just didn’t have heroes to deal with T1’s Morphling and Bristleback in the later stages of the game. T1 won the second match comfortably.

The last and final game was a stomp by Omega. T1 picked Alchemist, who needed space to farm, but Omega planned the game to shut T1 before they could get something out of the game. Both Tiny and Ember Spirit were running rampant, picking off heroes around the map. The game ended in a 32-4 massacre for T1.

Apex Legends Season 9 will add new hero, fix Banglore bugs

Season 9 is bringing big changes to legends in Apex Legends.

Developers confirmed that Lifeline’s passive ability, Combat Revive, is getting a massive nerf come May 4, but other legends are getting balance updates in Season 9 too. When Chaos Theory dropped March 9, players noticed that Bangalore and Caustic had some changes that weren’t in any official patch notes. And they didn’t like them one bit.

After the update, Bangalore’s Tactical Smoke Launcher and Caustic’s Nos Gas smokes were far less effective. Players weren’t able to use the smokes to hide as easily, which made the abilities a lot weaker.

“There was a change to the underlying VFX that we made with optimization in mind. The goal was to have it look identical to what was there before, but apparently, that’s not what happened,” Respawn developers stated at the time of the discovery.

Since then, nothing has changed and fans have been asking about the changes on Reddit.

On April 16, lead game designer Daniel Klein finally gave fans an update on the accidental nerfs. One user called the changes “significant issues that hinder the legend’s entire kit.” In response, Klein said that the updates are coming in Season 9. This confirmed that updates are on the way.

No further information was given about what changes will be made to Bangalore and Caustic.

What changes are coming in Apex Legends Season 9?

Bangalore, Lifeline, and Caustic are not the only ones seeing changes in Season 9. There might even be a new legend on the way. Leaks have pointed to a character called Valk.

Who is Apex Legends’ Valk?

Players first heard about Valk in Season 2 when Respawn had internal pages accidentally leaked. These pages showed in-development characters including Valk. The pages also had Loba, Rampart, and Revenant, who have since become legends in Apex Legends. This makes it quite likely that Valk is coming soon.

A more recent interview had Chad Grenier stating that the Season 9 legend will “hopefully be liked in Japan.” For many players, this hinted that the upcoming character may have Japanese origins. Aside from Valk’s home country, players have a few more hints about the new legend. Valk could be seen flying in Apex Legends’ 100 million player celebration video. And his leaked abilities point at him being an aerial-based legend too.

Cluster Missile is Valk’s tactical, based on leaks. He fires a rocket that explodes multiple times. Valk’s passive is possibly VTOL Jets. When players press “jump” they will be able to hover in the air. Valk’s ultimate is Skyward. Activating it will prepare Valk for launch. Teammates can interact with Valk to join the launch. Pressing the ultimate again will launch Valk into the air, allowing him to skydive.

Also in Season 9, there will be big changes to both of Apex Legends’ maps Olympus and World’s Edge.

Reapered joins 100 Thieves as the new head coach, Zikz leaves

Avatar

Former Cloud9 head coach Bok “Reapered” Han-gyu has been announced as the new head coach for 100 Thieves.

Starting with the 2021 LCS Summer Split, Reapered will take over the head coach position on 100 Thieves after the team’s stumble in the Mid-Season Showdown. Reapered will replace Anthony “Zikz” Gray, who has been with 100 Thieves since November 2019. Reapered will be back as an active coach after taking a break during the recent split, after parting ways with Cloud9 in September last year.

Reapered will be looking to take 100 Thieves to greater heights in the next split, and he has a very talented roster to work with. The former Cloud9 coach has previously been known for developing talent, with one LCS trophy in the bag and four showings at the World Championship. Reapered’s resume is not to be underestimated and he could be the missing piece that this lineup has lacked.

With Reapered joining the team, former head coach Zikz will be without a team after three splits at 100 Thieves. Zikz has helped 100 Thieves improve over the last season but didn’t reach the top placement that the organization is chasing. After getting four new players for the 2020 season, it was expected that 100 Thieves would fight for the top three and maybe even go all the way. 100 Thieves ended the recent split in fourth place, after being knocked out to TSM in the lower bracket.

100 Thieves rumored to buy out Fnatic mid laner Nisqy

Reapered might not be the only fresh face on 100 Thieves, as a recent rumor suggests they’ll be swapping mid laners. According to Turkey’s Esporing, 100 Thieves is in talks with Fnatic mid laner Yasin “Nisqy” Dinçer after just one split in Europe. Nisqy played two years for Cloud9 under Reapered and could potentially be the right player to round out 100 Thieves’ squad moving forward.

As Nisqy’s replacement, it’s also rumored that Fnatic is looking at Schalke 04’s Felix “Abbedagge” Braun. It’s already looking like the break before the next split will be full of roster moves, but everything remains rumors for now.

Zayt Retires From Competitive Fortnite For The Second Time

Fortnite legend – Zayt – retires from Fortnite for the second time this year.

Professional Fortnite player Williams “Zayt” Aubin announced today that he would once again retire from the game that’s brought him success since 2017. The multiple-time tournament winner resurfaced on Twitch after a two-week break. All signs leading up to his announcement referenced his general displeasure with Fortnite. Despite returning in late January, those who idolize Zayt as a competitor received the startling news that he will exit the tournament scene indefinitely.

Zayt Retires from Fortnite for the Second Time

Zayt went live on his Twitch channel to explain his reasoning and to answer some viewer questions. Shortly after, he took to Twitter, informing nearly 600k followers of his plans.

“For the people that missed the stream, I will go live for every tournament watching EU/NAE and teaching you guys the game/doing viewing party,” he wrote. “When there is [sic] no tournaments I’ll go live and do an unranked to radiant on Valorant.”

This instance marks the second time Zayt has called it quits after doing the same back in early January due to a lack of motivation. His initial retirement acted more like a hiatus. Zayt became a content creator while still running NA East professional scrims. Now, he reverts to the same role that he assumed during his initial retirement. Zayt plans to stream consistently, broadcast his commentary of Fortnite tournaments and work in some Valorant gameplay.

What Happened After Zayt Returned?

Zayt returned three weeks after retiring in January with a newfound motivation to compete and win. He slotted right back in with long-time trio teammates Stretch and Rocco “Saf” Morales. They secured an eighth-place finish in FNCS Chapter 2 – Season 5, which fell far out of the squad’s heightened expectations.

This trio’s showing in Season 5 marked Zayt’s sixth FNCS Finals appearance to date, making him one of the most decorated competitive players in the game’s history. He holds a top-ten result in every FNCS tournament where he reached the Grand Finals, including a win in Chapter 2 – Season 2. Zayt ultimately failed to reignite the competitive fire that allowed him to remain a top player for nearly four years.

Another Swan Song for Zayt

Snippets of Zayt’s second retirement stream revealed that he no longer enjoys playing Fortnite competitively, which factored heavily into his decision back in January. The Fortnite legend leaves behind a legacy unlike any other, where he remained a top player through multiple iterations of the game. Anyone with knowledge of the competitive scene should rank him as one of the all-time greats. While his second retirement may not leave as much of an emotional impact, the community at large will miss everything he had to offer.
