It’s at home among the trees: 25B Swinton Ave, Kew, named the Cliff House, is being sold by architect Peter McIntyre.

Househunters who dream of living among the treetops will be eager to put down roots in Kew’s iconic Cliff House designed by famous architect Peter McIntyre.

Mr McIntyre won a competition to design the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games Swimming Stadium along with well-known architects Kevin Borland and John Murphy when they were still at university.

Marshall White Boroondara director Duane Wolowiec said Mr McIntyre built the three-storey Cliff House at 25B Swinton Ave about 25 years ago.

Mr Wolowiec said the home’s glass walls and windows boasted some of Kew’s most spectacular views of the Yarra River, Melbourne skyline and leafy vistas of its bush-like setting.

“The Cliff House is a unique offering,” Mr Wolowiec said.

“I’ve sold real estate in this area for almost 20 years and I don’t think I’ve seen anything to this standard or similar to this.

“There’s nothing like it unless you move to the Dandenong Ranges where they have houses built into the side of a cliff.”

Balconies offer fantastic views of nature and the Melbourne skyline.

The residence’s top level includes an “outdoor sitting room” with an open fireplace and balcony overlooking the surrounding trees.

The third and lower level is a self-contained apartment “which also has great views”.

Mr Wolowiec said the five-bedroom abode would be privately auctioned with $4.5m-$4.9m price hopes at 2pm May 26, with bidders required to register.

The property is private and cosy.

Enjoy the outdoors all year round.

Since Mr McIntyre built the three-storey property, it has remained in his ownership while being rented to corporate organisations for guests to stay in.

“Peter is super creative in his design, using the fact that the house has been built right into the side of the cliff, it’s at the right orientation to capture beautiful afternoon sun streaming through the windows, and sunsets are just as lovely,” Mr Wolowiec said.

Impressive vistas.

He described the Cliff House as a “hidden escape”.

“A lot of people have said they wouldn’t not expect this property to be so close to Melbourne and that it’s ‘extraordinary’,” he said.

“We’ve had some inquiries from interstate about the house and a couple of inquiries from overseas.”

Mr McIntyre, who remains a practising architect at age 95, was made Officer of the order of Australia for services to architecture and urban planning in the 1980s.
