Most Travelers are probably quite familiar with Katheryne, the Adventurer’s Guild receptionist in Genshin Impact. She’s the young woman who gives players their daily commissions, helps send characters on expeditions, and offers rewards when players increase their Adventure Rank.
But beneath her friendly appearance, Katheryne might be hiding some unexpected secrets. As with most of the lore in Genshin Impact, once you begin digging deeper, strange things begin to surface. Here’s what you might not know about Katheryne in Genshin Impact.
The first strange thing you’ll notice about Katheryne is that there are multiple copies of her that look exactly alike. Whether it’s in Mondstadt, Liyue, or Inazuma, you’ll find an identical receptionist behind the counter of the Adventurer’s Guild.
It’s not uncommon for games like Genshin Impact to recycle NPC assets, and there are plenty of other NPCs who look quite similar. But the Traveler and Katheryne both make a specific point of her “clones” in their dialogue, especially when players find the third Katheryne in Inazuma. This makes it hard to look past.
Players can witness another strange occurrence surrounding Katheryne if they stay outside the Adventurer’s Guild for a while and listen to her idle voice lines. While most NPCs’ idle voice lines are basic lines like “Come check out our wares”, you’ll hear Katheryne saying lines like “Error…” and “Rebooting.”

This may simply be the developers poking fun at the robotic nature of NPCs, but it may also suggest something deeper – that all Katherynes are actually robots sent to various locations across Teyvat. As for who could have built her, we know Fontaine is a nation with highly advanced technology like the Kamera, and Snezhnaya is home to the Fatui Harbingers, one of whom was conducting research on the Ruin Guards. Either nation could have the capability of creating humanoid machines like Katheryne.
Another theory is Katheryne has arrived from another world, much like the Traveler. Genshin Impact has never shied away from the concept of alternate worlds, and with Horizon Zero Dawn’s Aloy arriving soon in a collaboration, it seems anything is possible.
Whichever theory you prefer, it’s unlikely Katheryne’s mystery will be solved anytime soon. Sometime in the future, after miHoYo adds more regions to the game, we might find out who Katheryne really is and the purpose behind her creation.
