Neos Air has finally launched regular scheduled passenger services between Milan Malpensa (MXP) and New York JFK International (JFK). This follows months of cargo services between the two cities.
The carrier, which filed for the permission to operate passenger services to the United States back in March 2021, has now become the only Italian airline to offer services between the two cities. Unfortunately, the route is highly competitive, with flights being offered by Emirates, Delta and American Airlines. Additionally, United Airlines operates a service connecting Newark (EWR) with Milan Malpensa (MXP).
“Thanks to Enav and Milan Airports for the support of these months, thanks to all those who believed in it working tirelessly to make this promise a reality,” Neos Air published in a statement on social media.
At the time of writing, the first flight is on its way to New York. Despite departing 21 minutes late, it is expected to touchdown on United States soil 40 minutes ahead of schedule. The flight departed Milan with the traditional cake cutting ceremony.
A Boeing 787-9 will operate the service twice a week on Thursday and Sunday. “The start of the Milan-New York route is a milestone for us,” explained Carlo Stradiotti CEO of Neos.
Stradiotti continued: “It is a growth opportunity for our business and allows us to strengthen relations between Italy and the USA. With this route we begin to structure the flows between the two countries and to create a safe travel experience, on latest generation aircraft, equipped with increased comfort with an innovative and quality service. This is the starting point, but we are already planning to increase weekly frequencies to three from 2022, in addition to evaluating other routes.”
Neos has a fleet of 15 aircraft comprising 5 Boeing 737-800s, 4 737 MAX 8s and 6 Boeing 787-9s. The former two are used for short to medium-haul connections while the Boeing 787 is used for long haul services such as to New York.
