iPhone 14 To Feature Titanium Alloy Chassis

Date:

According to a report by JP Morgan Chase, the iPhone 14 series to hit the market in 2022 is likely to feature high-end designs with a new titanium alloy chassis. The use of titanium alloy will be one of the major changes in the 2022 iPhone series, and Foxconn will be a specialized manufacturer of titanium frames for these high-end models. The company currently uses the device in other versions of the Apple Watch Series 6, but the latest iPhones are made of aluminum and stainless steel.

Advantages & Disadvantages of Titanium Alloy

Titanium is tougher than stainless steel and more resistant to scratches; its durability makes it strong enough to withstand bending. It is similar to steel but is 45% lighter, and twice as strong as aluminum while weighing only 60% of the weight of steel. It is more resistant to corrosion compared to many other alloys.

But it has some disadvantages as oil from fingerprints can be easily detected in bare areas of titanium and titanium alloy, leaving unattractive marks on these devices. The hardness of titanium also makes it difficult to scrape, which can make it less appealing.

What’s the Solution?

Apple is looking to overcome both problems. A recent patent application shows that Apple is considering the use of thinner oxide coatings that can significantly reduce fingerprint visibility on these devices. The company is also planning for a blasting, planting, and chemical process that can give the titanium a high glossy surface for a more attractive appearance.

The Size Factor

The report also confirms the buzz surrounding next year’s iPhone that it will make a bigger splash than iPhone 13. Also, Apple did not plan to launch the mini-5.4-inch iPhone 14, with a small line ending at the back of the iPhone 13. Apple will offer two 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch iPhones, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. So, both iPhone 14 Pro and the standard iPhone will be available in those two sizes.

The Return of Touch ID

The JP Morgan Chase report also states that the iPhone will reintroduce Touch ID in some way, if not in 2021. It will be embedded in a side button. Some 2022 iPhones will no longer feature a notch display as Apple will adopt the punch-hole design that was previously used for Android devices.
