IONIA — A proposed medical marijuana business in Ionia has changed hands and the new owners are hoping to be approved for adult-use sales as well as medical.

The Ionia Planning Commission heard an update on the preliminary site plan and special land use permit for the business to be located at 420 S. Steele St., but the process isn’t moving forward just yet.
City Manager Precia Garland told planning commissioners the property had previously been approved for special land use for medical marijuana, but the development, which was owned by Michigan Provisioning, did not occur, even after an extension was granted in August 2021. The owners sold the property to HQ Ventures LLC of Dearborn, which wants to offer both medical and adult-use sales.
“They submitted an application to that effect. … There are a lot of missing things — essentially they just resubmitted what they originally submitted to us for medical,” Garland said. “They know they’ve got a little bit more homework to do before we can give them consideration.”
Normally the Planning Commission would review the preliminary site plan at this meeting, Garland said, “but this one’s too incomplete, period, to really even initiate that process.”
