April 30, 2021 – Inpixon, a company that uses technology to capture indoor data to create actionable intelligence, has this week announced the acquisition of a suite of augmented reality (AR), computer vision, localization, navigation, mapping, and 3D reconstruction technologies, including patents, trademarks, software and related intellectual property, from Visualix.

According to Inpixon, the solutions acquired from Visualix leverage patent-pending technologies and a smartphone’s camera and on-board sensors to create 3D models of indoor spaces; position a user on a map with centimeter-level accuracy; provide turn-by-turn, visually-guided navigation; overlay virtual artifacts onto the live map displaying key information, such as room name, amenities, photos or reviews; and make the navigated experience shareable with others.

“Merging the virtual and physical worlds can transform the way we interact with our environment, tell stories, and utilize information,” noted Nadir Ali, CEO of Inpixon. “The opportunities for augmented reality and computer vision to create smarter, safer and more secure spaces are nearly limitless — everything from navigation, asset tracking and smart-office applications to customer service, marketing and gamification. Both existing and potential customers have already expressed a desire for AR technologies. This acquisition illustrates our commitment to continuous innovation and integration of industry-leading, best-of-breed technologies positioning Inpixon to be able to meet this next wave of technology demand.”

According to Inpixon’s COO, Soumya Das, the Visualix solution’s simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) algorithms and related technologies can enable map creation and localization without requiring beacons or external sensors, which can ultimately help to simplify development and deployment. As a result, Inpixon intends to integrate and leverage the spatial computing and visual positioning technologies from Visualix in order to pursue new verticals in the commercial, industrial and consumer markets, as well as enhance Inpixon’s existing offerings.

Visualix co-founder, Michael Bucko, stated: “Our co-founder Darius Pajouh and I are very excited to be joining the Inpixon team and to begin integrating the computer vision and augmented reality technologies into the Inpixon Indoor Intelligence platform.” Pajouh added, “We believe AR and its related features are moving into the mainstream and are poised to become part of nearly every smartphone users’ daily experience. Inpixon is the perfect home for Visualix technologies, and we look forward to bringing the power and extraordinary benefits of AR and spatial mapping to businesses and their employees around the world.”

The company did not disclose the purchase amount of the acquisition. For more information on the Visualix platform for AR mapping and localization, click here. For more information on Inpixon, please visit the company’s website.

Gravitational Is A Gravity-Defying Puzzler For PSVR And PC VR

Gravity-defying puzzler Gravitational is coming to PSVR and PC VR very soon.

The VR title from developer Studica Solution will arrive on July 13th. Perp Games has also teamed up with the studio to release a boxed version of the game on July 16th. Check it out in the trailer below.

In the game, you play as a scientist named Sebastian, who uses a wheelchair. When his work at GraviCorp threatens to cause major damage, Sebastian travels through the facility, manipulating gravity to save the day. That means creating zero gravity areas to help you climb through environments, making new platforms and more.

If you’re on PC you can already try a demo of Gravitational over on Steam, where the game has official implementation for the HTC Vive (though we’d imagine other headsets work too). The game’s also been winning awards including at this month’s Big Festival, where it took home the ‘People’s Choice Award’ as well as receiving an honorable mention for the ‘Big Impact and Diversity’ category.

Will you be checking out Gravitational when it launches in July? Let us know in the comments below!

‘HairTouch’ VR Controller Lets You Pet A Virtual Cat Because Why Not?

This might be the strangest haptic feedback device we’ve seen yet.

Researchers based out of Taiwan’s National Taiwan University and National Chengchi University are working on a one-of-a-kind controller that uses VR technology and faux fur to simulate the sensation of snuggling a digital feline, resulting in what could easily be considered the strangest haptic device currently in development.

Presented earlier this week during the 2021 Computer-Human Interaction conference, HairTouch, as it’s referred to by the team, features a unique, albeit complex design. By controlling the length and direction of a small patch of fake fur mounted below the users index finger, the device is able to replicate the feeling of petting a small furry animal in VR. As the user strokes the back, head, and stomach of the virtual feline, the controller alters the position and length of the “fur” (composed of standard cosmetic brushes) in relation to their real-world movements using a Vive Tracker mounted to the back of the device.

In addition to fur, the HairTouch device can also be used to simulate various other textures in VR. In the video provided we see the user sampling a variety of pillow covers, each featuring their own unique stiffness, roughness, and surface height differences. Of course, this same system could, theoretically, be used for a variety of other use-cases, such as simulating physical human contact; not such a crazy idea in a post-COVID world.

That being said, HairTouch is a prototype device still in its early stages of development, therefore I wouldn’t expect a commercial release anytime soon, if at all. Once the technology has matured, however, I could see a similar—more streamlined device—be used for a variety of purposes.

Imagine slipping on a VR headset to “visit” a remote petting zoo. Or enrolling in a virtual cosmetology school and learning how to cut hair from the comfort of your home. Okay, these are some pretty weak examples, but you get my point.
