India’s SpiceJet to launch service to Brussels for vaccine transport

Date:

SpiceJet has today signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Belgium’s largest airport, Brussels Airport, to connect it with India. As of yet, the exact route details are unclear, however the flights are due to be operated by SpiceXpress – the airline’s cargo division.

The airline will work closely with Brussels Airport which has agreed to provide slots, networking contracts and additional help for SpiceJet which as of yet does not have much experience in long-haul flying.

In a statement, SpiceJet said: “The airline’s cargo arm, SpiceXpress, envisions to provide rapid and secure transportation of COVID-19 vaccine from and to Europe and beyond with proper temperature-controlled mechanism under the MoU”.

SpiceJet, in its release, mentioned that Brussels would become its “flight point for Europe” and expressed pleasure in being able to launch and further develop a relationship with Brussels Airport.

Arnaud Feist, CEO at Brussels Airport Company said: “Brussels Airport has more than 30,000m2 of temperature-controlled areas. As of today, we have already shipped more than 10 million doses of vaccine from our Brucargo platform to destinations around the world.”

SpiceXpress operates a fleet of 17 aircraft including an Airbus A340-300F wet-leased from HiFly. The aircraft had flown into the Belgian cargo hub, Liege, yesterday from Delhi. It is expected that the new flights to Brussels Airport will also depart Delhi, although that is currently unclear.

Vaccine transportation throughout India has already begun. Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri mentioned that a total of four airlines would be consigned to transport the vaccine across the country, including SpiceJet.
