The Boston Celtics are preparing for a possible year-long suspension for head coach Ime Udoka. The suspension is not finalized, but is coming down after the league learned about his consensual relationship with a female member of his staff. The relationship is considered a violation of the team’s code of conduct.
The Athletic’s Shams Charania reported the news via Twitter on Thursday.
Reports are surfacing that Udoka could possibly resign from the team entirely after the news became public. The NBA is considering a suspension of one full season for his breach of the code of conduct, but the optics of the situation may force him to resign to save face. He was engaged to Nia Long during the affair.
Udoka and the Celtics made the NBA Finals last season, losing to the Golden State Warriors in six games. It was his first season as head coach after Brad Stevens moved to the front office. In the event of a suspension, assistant Joe Mazzulla will be the interim coach.
