Estonian-founded Edumus raises €180K to tackle global teacher shortage

Published

on

Female-founded Estonian startup Edumus, which places working professionals in schools as part-time teachers, has raised €180K from renowned Estonian and Finnish angel investors to accelerate its growth. Involving professionals in schools will help to address the teacher shortage and enrich secondary education with real-life experience and skills.

According to the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS), 69 million teachers must be recruited to achieve universal primary and secondary education by 2030.

“21st-century schools need new kinds of teachers. We believe that scientists, developers, engineers and other specialists should be more involved in school education, and share their real-life experience. Edumus’ training programme and facilitating software system helps to connect schools with professionals. This year, Edumus platform will be launching in Ukraine in addition to Estonia, with ongoing negotiations in Uzbekistan,” said Maria Rahamägi, the 28 year-old female founder of Edumus.

The edtech startup, which aims to tackle the global teacher shortage, has just secured €180K in pre-seed funding to further develop their platform, expand significantly in Estonia, and start operations in Ukraine and Uzbekistan. This round of investment was raised from a group of local and foreign angel investors. “Edumus is a great example of how the FinEst Bay Area region is spawning new globally relevant innovation in education. We’re very excited about the possibilities,” commented Peter Vesterbacka and Kustaa Valtonen, founding partners at Random Ventures.

Edumus is a marketplace and platform that enables specialists from different fields and industries to join schools as part-time teachers. Through Edumus, they can give classes in a specific subject, to one grade, over the course of the school year.

Edumus’ software platform supports the whole recruitment process of the new teachers – it allows professionals to sign up to the programme, matches them with local schools who need their competencies, allows them to contact each other and sign contracts. Developed by Finnish teacher training professionals, Edumus’ training programme is designed specifically for people without previous academic teaching experience and covers 21st century pedagogics and teaching methodologies.

“[The] education industry has stayed fundamentally unchanged for the last 100 years, and there is a constant lack of innovation and passion. I see that Edumus can bridge both of these gaps – firstly, solve the challenge of the lack of teachers, and secondly, align the in-class theory with real life experiences from practitioners,” said Kristjan Raude, Edumus’ mentor and the President of Estonian Business Angels Network (EstBAN).

Launched in Estonia in 2019, in just two years the education initiative has already sent over 40 specialists to schools. This September, Edumus will send up to 200 more specialists to schools around Estonia as part-time teachers.

Estonia is proudly stating itself as an ‘Education Nation’, ranking 1st in Europe according to the latest PISA performance test results. During the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, announced that it would share all of its digital education tools to support other countries’ education systems during the Coronavirus crisis, including tools created by the country’s startups.

Google for Startups backs Scoodle in €1.6 million round to build tutor influencers

Published

on

Following a pre-seed round last year, Scoodle has raised around 1.6 million from Google for Startups, IFG and DA One Investment in their seed round.

Founded in 2017, Scoodle is an online learning platform allowing students to connect with the best tutors available. Made for tutors, by tutors, it has a stand-out approach to tutoring that is unlike their competitors. They are the first platform to offer 0% commission on bookings made.

Rachael Palmer, Head of VC and Startup Partnerships in EMEA at Google said: “Increasing access to quality education is one of the big opportunities that the tech sector provides, and we are really impressed with the speed of growth and the quality of execution that Ismail and his team have delivered to date.”

Their content-driven approach to tutoring sets them apart. Tutors use their profiles to demonstrate their knowledge to students before a booking is made. Tutor profiles showcase answers to questions, learning resources and a newly released video platform – making it easier for students to select the best tutor for them.

Since the pandemic, Scoodle has grown 10x in monthly users – largely driven by its growing content base. In 2020 alone, almost 70% of their tutoring bookings shifted online.

Co-founders Ismail Jeilani, Imdad Ahad and Mujavid Bukhari have worked in education and started companies together for many years prior to Scoodle. It was this experience that helped them identify a gap in the tutoring market.

Ismail explains that Scoodle was founded out of his experience being a tutor to cover university tuition fees. Scoodle is built on the principle that “Everybody has something they want to learn, and something they can teach. We’re bringing them together” – a pandemic is no exception.

For Scoodle, the lockdowns we’ve lived through presented a new opportunity to connect students and educators online. As commented by Jeilani: “We’re building a world where an Arabic expert living in Egypt can create classes or share answers with students from around the world.”

Scoodle believes content is the best way for tutors and students to connect: “The content that our tutors create on Scoodle lives on. This continues to benefit other students, long after the classes have ended.”
