You’re going to be doing a lot of walking in Death Stranding, so be sure to learn how to repair your boots.
With the release of the Death Stranding Director’s Cut, new players might feel a bit overwhelmed by the amount of walking they’ll have to do early on in the game. Eventually, you’ll be able to unlock other means of transportation which will make traversing the apocalyptic world a blast. Until then, a good pair of boots will be your best friends.
Like most equipment in Death Stranding, your boots will deteriorate as time goes on. The boot icon in the bottom left of the HUD will tell you just how worn down your boots are, and when might be a good time to replace them. There are various factors which will wear down your boots’ durability, including terrain and movement speed. Walking around in worn down boots certainly isn’t recommended and will do you more harm than good, therefore it’s a good idea to keep them in good condition.

The short answer is: you can’t. While a lot of equipment can be fixed with a simply use of the Repair Spray, Sam’s boots are an exception. After all, that would be too easy. Luckily, players will be able to craft a fresh new pair of boots early on, and there’s even a slot in your cargo for a spare pair.
Crafting a new pair of boots is pretty easy, too. They can be crafted at any distribution center or safehouse for very few materials, many of which should be in abundance around the local area. Players will need to use the terminal to craft a new pair of boots, which can then be equipped or stored. Be sure to check any shared storage to see if other players have kindly left a spare pair for you to use.
Boots can also be upgraded later on in the game, making them able to withstand more harsher treatment than your standard pair.
Death Stranding Director’s Cut is out now on PlayStation 5. An upgrade is available for those who previously purchased the game on PlayStation 4.
