How to edit text correctly?

Date:

In the Old Testament editions, the text was re-read by an editor, a literary editor, and a proofreader before being published, who caught a significant part of the errors (although not all of them). Now  there are a lot or possibilities to use online services. Just put edit my paper in Google and you will have answers. Also you can do this by yourself.

There are several ways to catch the mistakes that your brain is hiding from you. None of them are universal, but by combining several of them and experimenting with your perception, you have a chance to keep the number of errors to a tolerable minimum.

Radically change the type, color, font size or background

Your task is to make the brain stop slipping through the text and concentrate. To do this, you need to make the text look unusual. One of my acquaintances began to “see” the material really only when she increased the font to twenty-two point. And when the text, which was black on white, becomes white on blue, your consciousness may begin to perceive it as completely new, and hidden flaws appear.

Move the ruler

A good old-fashioned way to help first-graders focus on reading a text can be helpful for adults as well. In the line above the ruler, grammatical errors, which were not detected by the spelling check of the text editor, become noticeable first of all. This, of course, is easier to do on paper. There is another way on the screen – to read each subsequent line, highlighting it with the cursor.

Reread each sentence separately, highlighting or separating from the text with blank lines

In this way, you can detect insidious syntactic errors, inconsistencies in the members of the sentence, double-triple subordination, and so on. If the sentence is so long that you cannot comprehend it as a whole object, it is an alarm bell: shorten it or divide it into several.

Start reading the text from the end if you feel that you can’t hold your attention by reading it consistently

This is especially helpful if you have been working with the text for a long time and have reread it many times. Its logical structure is already fixed in your memory, but as soon as you start moving from the last paragraph, your attention is simply forced to concentrate.

Print the text and read from the paper

Research by British scientists has shown that the text on the screen and on paper our brain perceives differently. Therefore, it is very likely that you will see errors in the printout that have been hidden until now. But please do not waste paper on unimportant texts. And don’t show this advice to environmentalists.

Simulate a post

One day I noticed that I always start to see mistakes in my texts when I reread them already published. Um, I thought, what about trying to fool the brain and show it the text made public, but not quite? And indeed, the text published on the blog in the “just for me” mode was riddled with errors that I had not noticed before. If you do not have an online diary or website, you can use notes on Facebook.

Read the text aloud

You may feel awkward in the process, but it’s a surefire way to uncover hidden flaws in the text: rhythm breakdowns, syntactic excesses, unsympathetic constructions like “worked in Washington,” and so on. If you have a lot of time and inspiration, you can record yourself on a dictaphone and then listen.
