These stalking machines are hell-bent on capturing Samus. So, how do you counter an E.M.M.I. in Metroid Dread?
If you’ve been playing through Metroid Dread, you may have encountered an E.M.M.I. by now. These deadly robots are near-invincible to all of your normal weapons, making their encounters all the more intense. The Extraplanetary Multiform Mobile Identifier, or E.M.M.I., are DNA-extracting machines hunting down Samus Aran. You’ll largely encounter them patrolling certain zones. If you’re caught by one, there’s only one option available to you – counter.
So, how do you counter in Metroid Dread? Here’s what you need to know in order to avoid certain death.

If you’ve unfortunately been cornered by a terrifying E.M.M.I., your only hope for escape is to pull off a perfectly-timed counter. You’ll only get one shot at this, and it’s a very brief window of opportunity. Countering an E.M.M.I. will need to be done at the point where it first grabs you, or right before it impales you. Time it right and you’ll be given the chance to escape.
Players will notice a brief flash of light just as the E.M.M.I. is about to take action; this is the indication to press the ‘X’ button. The timing can be a little tricky so it’s best to avoid the situation at all costs. If you fail, it’s game over. Don’t worry too much, though. In Metroid Dread, a game over won’t send you back to your last save. Instead, players will be sent back to when they first entered the E.M.M.I. zone for another chance to make it through in one piece.
