How BeReal Became NSFW: Photo-Snapping Gen Z Employees Create a New Privacy Worry for Employers

Date:

It was 2:37 p.m. on a Tuesday when new university grad Connor (not his real name) got the push notification on his iPhone: “It’s time to BeReal!” A full-time employee in the corporate offices of a major retailer, Connor took his cue from the red-hot social media app BeReal and shot a quick photo of his workstation. He then scrolled through his friends’ BeReals, finding photo after photo of fellow grads at their new office jobs in marketing, finance, government and tech. Many of the shots included glimpses of computer screens, spreadsheets and whatever else they were working on at the time.

Connor, the curious type, began zooming in on all these BeReal images. “If you post it, I might as well look,” he said. Under one shot that featured a computer screen, a friend commented, “This is definitely some trade secret that you’re breaking.”

And those aren’t the only secrets sneaking into BeReals. “I’ve tried to avoid posting my screen on BeReal,” said Lena, a 21-year-old rising college senior interning this summer at a consulting firm. “But one of my friends will just post whatever she’s working on at the time. It’s good enough quality where at times I have been able to read whatever analysis that she’s doing.” The kicker: Her friend works for a rival consulting firm— “which is even funnier,” Lena said.
