and why it’s not a bad thing.
The first thing to understand about the AI revolution is that it’s not going to be a one-way train. We humans have been creating machines that can think and reason for centuries. We’ve even been doing it ourselves for a while. But the technology that’s now in development is fundamentally different.
A.I. is not a new phenomenon. It’s just a different form of technology. The most advanced technology today is the human brain, which is at least 100 billion times more powerful than the most advanced computer on earth.
It’s a lot safer, it’s a lot more reliable, and it’s a whole lot more efficient. We’re going to see a lot more A.I. in the future. Even if you believe that there’s a significant future impact from A.I., the question is, how significant is it really going to be?
In the near future we’ll be able to create machines that can do a lot of things that we do today. That includes driving, operating medical equipment, and even doing human labor.
A lot of people are concerned about A.I. taking over all of our jobs, but that’s not going to happen. Probably.
The most common jobs automated in the future will be those that are repetitive and require little or no training. I’m not sure the job that a surgeon or an engineer would have is going to be replaced by A.I., because a surgeon can spend years in medical school learning everything they need to know to be a surgeon. Including empathy. On the other hand radiologists are already slowly outperformed by AI, and pathologists are next on the list.
Jobs that are not on the table right now, such as those that require a lot of creativity and critical thinking, might be replaced by A.I. over time. No job is safe.
We’ve already been training computers to be good at certain kinds of tasks, like video games. But there are still a lot of things that you need to know how to do to learn how to code a computer or program an A.I. Though still AutoML is coming to disrupt this domain.
It’s not just a matter of programming. It’s about understanding. It’s about understanding the world around us. It’s a matter of understanding the world in which we all live. So AI is not about programming. It’s about understanding.
If we could build intelligence that was as smart as we are, it would be better than us on every single attribute.
AI is here. We are on the cusp of a massive change in the way we interact with technology and with each other. And it’s going to happen sooner rather than later.
The biggest misconception about AI, I think, is that it’s going to be a bunch of robots running around. I don’t think that’s going to happen. I think we will have a few super-intelligent machines. But ultimately, AI is going to be something that’s very close to us, like a human.
The real question is: What makes a human human? Is it our intelligence? Is it our creativity? Is it our adaptability? And the answer is: It’s a combination of all of those things.
Artificial intelligence has been around a long time, and it’s already been doing some really interesting things. But when you are talking about something that’s going to have a huge impact on society, something that’s going to change the world, something that’s going to make life much better for billions of people, I think it’s really important to understand what that AI is and how it works, and how you make it work for us, humans.
