Horizon Forbidden West pre-orders have gone live, but it seems there’s no way to upgrade from a PS4 to a PS5 version.

The sequel to Guerilla’s much-loved Horizon Zero Dawn, Horizon Forbidden West will be coming to Playstation consoles Feb. 18, 2021. Pre-orders for the game have now gone live and fans have a variety of versions to choose from. There’s one problem that fans were quick to notice. As it stands, players who buy the PS4 version of the game will not be able to upgrade it to PS5 at a later date.

The decision has understandably frustrated a lot of fans. As PS5 shortages has continued to affect players, many are still relying on their trusty PS4 to play some of the new upcoming titles, with the intention to upgrade at a later date. A lot of Sony’s recent releases have been sympathetic to this problem, offering fans the option to upgrade some of their games to PS5 for free, or for a small fee. Games like Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla and Cyberpunk 2077 have all promised free PS5 upgrade, while games like Death Stranding offer fans an upgrade to the PS5 Director’s Cut for $10.

Unfortuntely, Horizon Forbidden West won’t be getting the same treatment as some of the previously mentioned games. Instead, the cheapest way to get hold of both the PS4 and PS5 version is to buy the Digital Deluxe Edition, currently planned to cost $80. This is $10 more than the standard version, currently sitting at $70. This edition gives players access to a digital copy of both the PS4 and PS5 versions of the game, alongwith a variety of additional extras.

The next available version that will give players access to both a PS4 and PS5 version is the Collector’s Edition, available to preorder for $200. This edition comes with numerous extras, including physical Tremortusk and Aloy statues, a Steelbook case, mini art book and all content from the Digital Deluxe Edition.

It’s important to note that the PS4 version can be played on a PS5, but it won’t be the version optimised for PS5.

As it stands, Sony has no plans to revert their decision at this time. Fans will either need to purchase the Digital Deluxe Edition of the game or purchase the PS5 version again in order to play both versions of the game.
