After being grounded for well over a year and a half following two fatal crashes, Boeing has finally issued the necessary fixes and modifications for its best-selling narrow-body aircraft. Back in November 2020, the 737 MAX was given approval by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), with the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) approving the aircraft in January 2021.
While other regulators around the world are lifting the ban on the grounded aircraft, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in India is yet to certify the aircraft as airworthy for Indian airlines that operate the aircraft.
Finally, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in India has stated that it will allow foreign airlines to fly over Indian airspace using the Boeing 737 MAX. In order to do so, an airline must first get prior approval from the DGCA. In addition to this, the aircraft must be updated and fixed in accordance with recommendations approved by Boeing. The aircraft also has to be re-certified by the local aviation authorities of that country.
Despite being allowed to fly the aircraft over India, airlines are still not allowed to fly the aircraft into or out of Indian airports, but if a foreign carrier’s or lessor’s 737 MAX has been grounded on Indian soil, they can receive approval from the regulator to fly out of that Indian airport.
After the collapse of Jet Airways, India only has one 737 MAX operator left. SpiceJet is currently the sole operator of the aircraft in India and is still not very keen on bringing back the aircraft into service, and neither is the DGCA. The main reason is due to the pandemic In India, with passenger traffic and operational routes at an all-time low, the airline sees no use for more aircraft in its fleet just yet. However, Boeing remains optimistic and hopeful that the Indian aviation authorities will give the 737 MAX the seal of approval very soon.
