Hemp Industry Assoc names executive director, partners with industrial hemp group

The Hemp Industries Association has named former marijuana activist Jody McGinness as its new executive director.

After a months-long search with nearly 100 qualified candidates, the national hemp association selected McGinness, a veteran association executive in the non-profit sector.

McGinness last served as the head of fundraising for the Marijuana Policy Project, which advocates for  the legalization of adult-use high-THC cannabis.

He added HIA is looking forward to working with McGinness as the association expands and crafts new strategies to lead the hemp industry.
“We wanted someone with a strong record of leadership when it comes to revamping non-profits, empowering diverse teams for success, and strategic planning and alignment,” said HIA president Rick Trojan.

The executive director role has been vacant since the departure of Colleen Lanier at the end of 2019.

McGinness is based in Washington D.C. and said he is inspired by the potential of the U.S. hemp industries to provide opportunities for entrepreneurship and innovation to the benefit of all Americans.

“I’m thrilled to be joining the HIA team at what is truly a pivotal moment for the association and the industry,” said McGinness.

One project McGinness will help manage is a partnership with the National Industrial Hemp Council to explore the creation of a national hemp marketing checkoff, an agreement the two associations announced Wednesday.

The NIHC and HIA will form a working group with industry representatives to discuss the details of how a hemp checkoff would be structured and operate, and develop and submit a proposal to the USDA that will include an industry analysis, justification for the program, program objectives and the impact on small businesses.

“A checkoff program further legitimizes a rapidly growing industry and will help hemp farmers compete on a level playing field with producers of other agricultural-related commodities,” said Patrick Atagi, board chairman of the National Industrial Hemp Council.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Service, the same agency that wrote the interim final rule for hemp production, oversees marketing checkoff programs to promote farm commodities and expand market opportunities for agricultural industries, funded through assessments at the first point of sale.

Checkoffs pool that money to use for research, education and promotion efforts aimed at expanding sales and improving production efficiencies.

8 weed strains for hiking

Avatar

Is it just me, or does the time feel exceedingly right to disappear into the woods for a few hours and get astronomically high?

The howling winds of uncertainty have all but blown 2020 to smithereens. It’s enough to make a person need reminding of how fleshy and insignificant their timelines are when compared to an endless forest or a mid-city wetland. Which is to say, losing one’s self in nature is a singular form of self-care. And since we are unequivocally in the era of self-care, let’s take a few deep breaths, strap on our fanny packs and face masks, and get hiking with these eight exhilarating and mollifying strains.

Remember, your endocannabinoid system is like your fingerprint, totally unique to you. Keep in mind that the effects described below may not line up across the board, and each person’s experience is theirs alone.

Golden Pineapple

Golden Pineapple is gently energetic and relaxing at lower doses, making it an agreeable complement to a low-impact, meditative stroll. At higher doses, it becomes psychotropic and effervescent, which is an exceptional way to evolve a meditative stroll into an intense birdwatching session.

Golden Pineapple’s parents are Golden Goat and Pineapple Kush, so expect a funky fruit profile with savory herbal undertones and dense, sugar-dusted flowers.  Either low-dose or high, the strain is a lovely accompaniment to both the outdoors and mild physical activity.

Clementine

Clementine has a reputation for being borderline frenetic before coming into focus. Those two disparate effects come together exquisitely while navigating the wild outdoors — or your closest city park, whatever works.

Parented by classic sativa strains, Lemon Skunk and Tangie, Clementine takes after Lemon Skunk in terms of flavor profile and rubbery energy, but the distilled head high is boldly reminiscent of Tangie. Tangie flowers sparkle with fiery stigmas and sugary trichomes, and the strain is also a popular extract that makes for a mouthwatering vape.

Blueberry Headband

Blueberry Headband is an animated strain that promises to put a pep in your step while being social.  On a family hike around your closest Audubon Society (or commensurate nature park), it can potentially keep you fully engaged with both family and nature without ever stepping into giggle-fit territory.

The inherent hurdle in enjoying Blueberry Headband is in knowing that the name has been attached to a number of phenotypes. For our purposes, we refer to the Emerald Triangle Seeds variation, bred from a cross of 76 Blueberry, Emerald OG Kush, Cali Sour D, and Pre-98 Bubba Kush. The result is a hybrid that expertly straddles the line between euphoria and calm sociability without ever falling too far into either lane.

White Fire OG

Since the effects of strains tend to rely on the individual, reports vary on the effects of White Fire OG. For some, it’s the quintessential wake and bake, for others, it’s immediate couchlock. White Fire OG is borne of The White and Fire OG, both indica bent hybrids with caryophyllene and limonene forward terpene profiles. White Fire OG defies both its parents by (most often) boasting a bright and buoyant high.

If your chemistry allows it to hit with enthusiasm, opt for a hike with a moderate skill level. This strain has the potential to keep your body receptive and elastic while your mind wanders, which is kind of what we’re going for here.

Sour Tangie

Sour Tangie’s uncomplicated lineage from East Coast Sour Diesel and Tangie, the child strain is every bit as lively as one would expect, coming from two distinctly upbeat cultivars. What makes Sour Tangie singular is the burst of creative energy that accompanies its exuberant body high.

A trail with a suggestion of moderate skill level that might find you leapfrogging over fallen trees and encountering the occasional rogue blackberry thorn will bring out the best in your Sour Tangie experience.

Quantum Kush

Quantum Kush is already popular with enthusiasts of getting high and walking in the woods, respectively. It’s a high THC varietal parented by Sweet Irish Kush and Timewreck, with a smothering relaxation effect that both soothes and elevates..

Any mild to moderate hike will activate the singular euphoria of Quantum Kush; a breezy waterfront or sunbleached beach where hikers can strip down on a hot day will most likely result in a “best day ever, best weed ever” type situation — and we could all use one of those every now and again.

Space Candy

The most accurately named strain on this list is Space Candy. The charmed child of Space Queen and Cotton Candy is both candy-sweet and extra spacey. This strain exists in the complex intersection of euphoria and delirium, making more moderate to difficult conditions — think narrow pathways and loose scrabble — feel like a Bear Grylls fantasy.

Space Candy’s terpene profile is citrus dominant, but the underlying earthy notes add a sophisticated funk. Users should expect resiny buds flecked with red and purple, and a confectionary floral aroma that blooms into citrus at the exhale.

Bruce Banner #3

Hiking challenges are why Bruce Banner #3 may potentially be your perfect hiking strain. Maintaining focus, eschewing stress, and staying bouncy and energetic during vigorous physical activity and elevation gain are all hallmarks of this Bruce Banner phenotype.

Bruce Banner’s storied lineage began in the labs of Los Angeles-based Dark Horse Genetics, where OG Kush and Strawberry Diesel cultivars were bred to produce five phenotypes. Numbers 2 and 4 were subsequently abandoned, while 1, 3, and 5 were selected for their high potency. Of those remaining phenotypes, #3 remains the most popular and widely available of the Bruce Banner strains. Expect a sharply herbal flavor profile, a tart, pungent mouthfeel, and a swooning onset that develops into a calm and creative euphoria.

Study Shows Similarities in Millennial and Boomer Cannabis Preferences

Avatar

Published

on

Millennials and Baby Boomers love a good feud, but it looks like smoking a bowl together might put some of that angst to rest after all. According to a recent study from Verilife, a dispensary operator under the PharmaCann umbrella, there are more similarities than differences when it comes to how cannabis users from both demographics partake in the leafy green.

The study revealed that inhaled cannabis is the preferred method of use for both groups, possibly because of familiarity. Naturally, Boomers are used to smoking joints and pipes instead of imbibing other ways, and even some Millennials started using cannabis at a time when smoking was more common than taking edibles or using newer inventions like vape pens. Later studies may reveal that Generation Z users aren’t as used to inhaled products.

Another reason inhalation might be the most common way to consume cannabis in both groups is economics. Flower is one of the most inexpensive ways to buy cannabis, meaning that younger consumers with less income may decide to opt for it even if other options are appealing and available. Also, accessibility plays a role, as cannabis is sold in every dispensary in legal states, and is an easy-to-understand method of consumption..

Generational Differences

There are some differences in consumption methods, however. One big one is the reason for consumption.

“One of the biggest differences between how Millennials and Boomers consume marijuana lies within the reasons why each generation consumes,” the study continues. “For Millennials, nearly half consume for recreational reasons, which is a stark contrast to Boomers who are twice as likely to use marijuana solely for medical reasons. Among those who consume for medical reasons, the top health ailments vary between generations. For example, Millennials cite chronic pain (27 percent) and migraines (13 percent) as their top medical reasons compared to Boomers who consume for arthritis (15 percent) and chronic pain (13 percent).”

However, when it came to those who do use cannabis recreationally, Millennials and Boomers both reported that they use cannabis for relaxation. Also, both groups reported they spend about the same amount of money each month on cannabis, and that consumption has increased since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the study, monthly spending on average has gone up about $27 a month for individuals, in addition to the $76 on average that individuals spent before COVID.

The other big difference is who smokes more cannabis. Based on the study, Millennials do.

“According to respondents, Millennials are more likely to consider themselves daily consumers. In fact, 1 in 5 Millennials said they consume marijuana daily compared to just 12 percent of Boomers.”

However, Boomers are still the ones who are more likely to wake and bake. They reported much more cannabis use early in the morning compared to Millennials, which could be due to lifestyle and being more likely to be retired.

These findings show that while there are definitely differences in consumption style, cannabis could be the one, uniting factor that could end the Baby Boomer vs. Millennial strife once and for all.

Black Resident Make Up 97% Of All Marijuana Arrests In New York Capital

Avatar

Black people make up less than 30% of the people living in Albany, New York, but a recent report shows they constitute 97% of the cannabis-related arrests in the state’s capital. Though about 54% of Albany residents are white, according to U.S. Census data, only four people arrested for cannabis charges between July 2019 and June 2020 were white. And out of a total of 134 marijuana-related offenses that resulted in tickets or arrests, nearly 60% of the citations were for possession only.

A study by the American Civil Liberties Union earlier this year showed white and Black Americans consume cannabis at similar rates. However, black Americans were almost four times as likely to be arrested for cannabis possession.

These disproportionate arrest figures follow similar patterns across New York. Nearly 80% of Buffalo cannabis arrests targeted Black residents in 2017, though they make up less than 40% of the population. In New York City, Black and Latinx residents accounted for 94% of all low-level cannabis arrests last year.

The Albany cannabis arrest numbers from this year represent an effort to improve racial profiling by the city’s police department. A lawyer from the New York Civil Liberties Union last year published a report showing similar disproportionate figures between Black and white residents. According to the Albany Times Union, Police Chief Eric Hawkins vowed to dig into these racial disparities and explore how the department could reverse possible biases.

Hawkins shifted the blame on the coronavirus pandemic, telling reporters the department needed to focus its resources and attention to preventing the disease’s spread. Last year, Gov. Andrew Cuomo issued a mandate that will force local departments like Albany’s to realize police reform initiatives. If they do not, they could lose stand funding.

“The city of Albany Police Reform Collaborative will be undertaking a comprehensive review of the Albany Police Department data associated with arrests by race, gender, and other demographics, and we look forward to having a robust community discussion around these statistics,” Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan said in an emailed statement.

New York decriminalized cannabis possession of less than two ounces last year. District Attorney David Soares added his office would no longer pursue cases where minor cannabis possession was the only charge and the Sheriff’s Department said it would stop issuing those tickets. But the Albany police department did not stop making arrests.

“We’re not stopping young men in the community and writing them minor possession of marijuana tickets, it’s just not happening,” Hawkins told the Times Union. “I’m not seeing that these young men are being targeted but it’s concerning to me that that they are the ones who are impacted by this.”
