HackAtom V Winners Spotlights

Date:

HackAtom V, our first exclusively virtual hackathon event of its kind, was a major success and had a large range of project submissions. Over 340 teams registered in the two week hackathon and entries included projects like Balancer-like pools, API Tools, games, supply management, and NFT Marketplaces. Today, we wanted to highlight some of the best entries.

HackAtom V had five winning categories. In this blog post, we are going to showcase the top winners of each category, describe each project, and highlight the projects’ next steps. In total, our winners received close to $50,000 USD in prizes distributed by Interchain Foundation.

As the winner of the Gaia Award, the Clawback Account project is recognized as the project that has the best chance of reaching product market fit. Similar to a Bitcoin Vault, the solution uses a time lock feature to add additional flexibility to assets custodied in a hot or cold wallet.

Clawback Account uses a programmable backup strategy of wallets, which can be useful for exchanges or merchants.

“Essentially, a clawback account is a type of account with two holders/keys where the second holder is a “backup” that may transfer the tokens from that account within a set time period. It has at least two potential applications:

1) management strategy for exchange wallets,

2) cashback and reward adjustments

The prototype was made as a smart contract for the CosmWasm module, so supports both native and CW20 tokens.”

The team is now considering to write an ADR (an Architecture Decision Record) with the implementation, followed by a proposal for a Cosmos SDK module. Additionally, the team is looking to use the tool to enhance the Cosmos SDK community pool.

Behind this team is Tomas Tauber, who is currently the Lead Engineer for the crypto.com chain. He has an extensive background in Computer Science research, complemented with a PhD in the subject and years of experience developing blockchains across multiple platforms.

Winner of the Galileo Award for the most creative dApp blockchain application. The NFT Marketplace surprised the judges with their custom-made artwork — Cosmons, along with a fully working backend and frontend application. The 4-person team created a marketplace to trade CW721 (equivalent of ERC721, more known as “NFT’ ) and CW20 (equivalent to ERC20 are fungible Tokens) Tokens, powered by WebAssembly smart contracts.

The NFT marketplace is a generic smart contract for selling non-fungible CW721 tokens and buying them with fungible CW20 tokens, so the key takeaway is that it’s compatible with all CW721 and CW20-based tokens. The CW721 tokens that are put up for sale are kept in one central location which makes them easy to find and browse through, ensuring maximum visibility. These CW721 tokens can then be bought in exchange for CW20 tokens.

As tokenization proliferates in the Cosmos ecosystem, a marketplace is a critical component to buying and selling tokens. In addition, the developer team has made an effort to also create in-game battle logic and created some very cool NFT’s. Make sure to check out their demo in the link below.

What’s next:

“We would like to tackle the integration of wasmd with Peggy, so that we can run smart contracts on both ETH and Cosmos, and add support for NFT tokens in the Peggy module.”

Furthermore, they plan to continue their work on their application by adding support for

The blockscape team is behind the project. They are validators on various Cosmos SDK blockchains, such as Cosmos Hub, E-Money, Regen, Desmos and others, so do not forget their name as they will continue to be active in this area.

Winner of the Wormhole and the Community Choice Awards — the Sampark project enables users to add their favorite memories in the form of pictures, achievements, work, expressions or memes onto the blockchain. Enabling, “memories to never die”. Sampark is a Hindi expression that stands for the connections that we form in life. Built with the Cosmos SDK blockchain, ReactJS and the Skynet, it provides a decentralized storage solution for memories of all kinds.

The team is looking to improve the application further after the HackAtom V:

“We have plans to further improve the dapp so that it supports videos and songs too. We would convert these images, songs, videos or any other media into NFT so that they can be bought on the marketplace in our dapp.We want to make and art marketplace as we are in covid 19 and these art would have some value later on so you can also sell them on the very same dapp. Another feature that we want to add is the ability to fund the artist and improve the UI.”

The idea is very complementary to the NFT Marketplace also built in the HackAtom V. In this decentralized environment, different applications might be interconnected.

Behind this project is the open source developer Hritwik (3scava1i3r) from India, who participates in the Cosmos SDK and Ethereum blockchain scene.

“Balancer meets Interchain Staking” — Osmosis announces itself as a strong contender in the DeFi Market and has won the Gringotts Award as the best DeFi App using the Cosmos SDK.

Osmosis is an onchain generalized multi-token automated market maker and a self-balancing weighted portfolio built on the Cosmos SDK with extendability as a custom staking token design tool for cross-chain incentive alignment, risk diversification, token distribution, and chain valuation by converging DeFi and staking together. (Hye Han, creator of Osmosis)

In combination with IBC, Osmosis provides a liquidity pool for various blockchain tokens, an automated market maker, and token swap functionality. It also brings the idea of a customizable staking token. An idea called ‘interchain staking’ that uses modular tools and ideas that are widely available within the blockchain ecosystem. The team will be dependent on the community to receive more attention, testing and users for their application. Make sure to check out their resources below and contact them in case you have something to add.

Behind this project are:

Tony Yun is co-founder at Chainapsis, a three-time HackAtom prize winner, and an active Cosmos community contributor.

Hye Han is a CS undergraduate student at Choongang University, and an avid blockchain learner. She’s interested in creating easy-to-use front end interfaces that will help demystify the scary world of blockchain applications.

Byeongsu Hong is a software engineer with experience in Golang, Typescript, and Solidity. He enjoys creating experimental DeFi blockchain applications.

Junho Park is a backend developer that’s interested in ZK snark/starks. He has previously built a prototype Cosmos-SDK module that allows anonymous voting by users utilizing zero knowledge technology.

Lastly, we want to congratulate the two breakout Cosmonauts who made it on the list of Fellows in our inaugural Tendermint Fellowship program: Tony Yun and Hyungsuk Kang!
For those who have missed the announcement, Tendermint Fellowships is a new program being launched by Tendermint Inc. that aims to identify talent that is as-yet undiscovered to then provide the early stage financial backing for converting that raw energy into the next killer decentralized application to burst into the cryptocurrency market. Find more about this program here.

Tony Yun, Osmosis

Tony is a co-founder at Chainapsis, a three-time HackAtom prize winner, and an active Cosmos community contributor. He is the primary author of the ICS27 Interchain Accounts specification and currently leading the effort in the Cosmos-SDK implementation. He is also the lead developer behind Keplr wallet, creating the most versatile and extendable Cosmos wallet which provides critical UI infrastructure for many zones within the Cosmos ecosystem. He has also contributed to areas such as liquid staking (Everett), javascript signing library (CosmosJS), interchain DeFi (Osmosis, AstroCanvas) and many more.

GitHub

Hyungsuk Kang, Quasar

Hyungsuk is a polyglot developer with an initial background in the Polkadot ecosystem. He has been an active code contributor, technical documentation translator, and community leader. He’s worked with the SpeckleOS team which builds a MetaMask-like browser extension signing mechanism for the Polkadot ecosystem. He’s also a software developer at Stake Technologies.

He was introduced to the Cosmos ecosystem when he participated in HackAtom Seoul, and recently has begun working as a contractor at Terra as a part-time CosmWasm smart contract developer.

As a Tendermint Fellow, Hyungsuk will be continuing work on his HackAtom V award-winning project, Quasar.
