GP’s concerns over easy access to pill, medical marijuana

Date:

A Coast GP has raised concerns about legislative changes making access to the pill and medicinal cannabis easier, warning convenience should not trump consultations with doctors.

Medwell Clinic Caloundra Dr Kiran Varma welcomed changes to prescription rules but said visits to family GPs remained important.

“While convenience and increased access to medications are considered positive outcomes, I worry about the potential lack of depth of clinical reasoning in a pharmacy dispensing interaction that normally underpins a medical consultation with the patient’s family doctor,” he said.

The call came after the State Government passed new laws allowing women access to oral contraceptive pills which are not on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme from pharmacies without a valid repeat prescription.

Provisions used to only included those listed on the PBS when Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced in March she would make changes to allow women more access to the pill without renewing their prescription.

Pharmaceutical Society of Australia Queensland branch president Shane MacDonald said the move was important to allow for continued treatment.

The laws are expected to come into effect in late 2020.
