FutureMakers Newsletter August 2022

This month we’ve seen more than enough rain to last a year in many parts of the country – an timely reminder of the impact of climate change and the fact that this sort of disruption is becoming increasingly frequent in our lives – with significant impact on our schools and communities.
I’m currently reading Ten Lessons for a Post-Pandemic World by Fareed Zakaria in which he identifies three forces shaping our modern world; geopolitical, economic and technological. The message is clear. We need to be building resilience into our organisations and systems to be better prepared for the challenges ahead
In this month’s newsletter I’ve shared a selection of recent blog posts that explore this further.

In this newsletter…

Don’t look up

The title of this post is a reference to a movie of the same name that is currently popular on Netflix, but the detail of the post explores more of what we can do to understand the trends around us across a range of areas. There’s some practical ideas also to help guide you through a process of how to engage with these ideas to become more ‘future focused’ in your thinking and behaviour.

We all want trees now…

Whether we’re talking about climate change, the health system, education or environmental issues, a common refrain in much of the current rhetoric is the urgent need for action. This post highlights fact that what needs to be done should have been started a long time ago, but by ignoring the signs, we’re now faced with seemingly insurmountable challenges in terms of the scale and complexity of the problems that lie before us – and our children.

Building and sustaining innovation

This post is a personal reflection of over 40 years involved in various innovations in education. As I reflect back now, I have had the opportunity to see the cycles of innovation that are written about by so many others, and what makes some things sustainable, while others work for only a short period of time.

Courage and Collectivity

The focus of this post is on how we must all see addressing change as a part of the responsibility we share – and not leave it to someone else to figure out. It’s all about having courage, and demonstrating collectivity. The concepts of courage and collectivity are explored in light of the responses being made to the current disruption being caused by COVID (and other things!)

From the web…

Some links to articles and posts of interest to future focused educators:
  • Redefining student success – great advice re the importance of creating definitions of success that reflect communities’ aspirations for their students’ futures – from the Aurora Institute.
  • Evaluating Online Learning – While the ideas shared are primarily from a tertiary perspective and are therefore more relevant to the more traditional expectations of assessment, it’s always useful to read articles like this in order to better understand some of the options and alternatives that can be considered.
  • 4 Practices for Innovative School Leaders – Drawing from personal experience, these four practices shouldn’t come as a surprise to most educators, but are well worth repeating to ensure we see the changes in our system that must be made.
  • Leveraging Technology to Create More Learner-Centered Experiences – why standardise our teaching when learning is personal? Another great post from Katie Martin

ULearn22

This year’s ULearn conference is being held online again, offering the opportunity for even more people to access the great lineup of speakers and workshops. Why not organise to gather with a group in your local school or Kāhui Āko to share the experience?
I can recommend Valerie Hannon who is one of the keynote speakers to anyone interested in what the future of education holds. Valerie is a global thought leader, inspiring systems to re-think what ‘success’ will mean in the C 21st century, and the implications for education.

But wait, there’s more…
