LoL team Funplus Phoenix (FPX) have just demolished Royal Never Give Up (RNG) in the 2021 LPL Spring Split playoffs — further proof that the best teams in China are separated by the slimmest of margins. We’re talking about absolute giants of competitive League, and some of the most talented players who’ve ever stepped foot on stage to compete.

Still, no one expected a clean sweep, especially not as clean a sweep as the one we just witnessed. Royal Never Give Up entered the playoffs with a metric ton of momentum, which was a by-product of their incredibly dominant regular-season run. With fourteen wins and just two losses, RNGU didn’t struggle much against the vast majority of their peers.

FunPlus Phoenix, on the other hand, had a somewhat less impressive showing, with eleven wins and five losses to their name. Still, we knew what they were capable of and just how dangerous they could be given the right circumstances. Their line-up is still as staggering and imposing as ever with five World Champions, one of which had only just added this most prestigious trophy to his collection mere months ago.

Phoenix Rising

The fact that FunPlus struggled against so many of their LPL peers tells you all you need to know when it comes to just how stacked a region we’re talking about. The talent pool in China is as vast as it is endless, and there’s always a brand-new superteam to talk about in addition to a slew of seasoned veterans who are still as vigorous as ever. Heck, Suning — the 2020 World Championship finalists — aren’t even in the Top 4. Let that one sink in. Suning at least put up a fight against Top Esports, unlike Royal Never Give Up who were outmatched and outgunned in every which way.

As is so often the case, Gao “Tian” Tian-Liang and Nuguri stood out in all the right ways, with spectacular performances across multiple different picks and team comps. The rest of the team delivered as well, but once the going got rough, it was these two who stepped up the most.

FPX have now beaten Rare Atom (formerly known as Vici Gaming), JDGaming, and RNG in the 2021 Spring playoffs, making these LoL matches look pretty darn easy, too. They’ll face the winner of Top Esports vs. Edward Gaming and, should they emerge victorious yet again, they’ll find themselves in the 2021 LPL Spring Split finals.

A Shot At Redemption

As for Royal Never Give Up, they still have a shot at redemption, so their Spring Split run is far from over. They’re currently the only team in the lower half of the bracket and will face off against the loser of TES vs. EDG — yet another spectacular clash that’s bound to deliver in all the right ways.

So, if you’re into top-tier play and are partial to skirmish-heavy bloodbaths (with a pinch of controlled madness), you simply have to tune in going forward!
