Fortnite Legend “Saf” Announces Retirement

Date:

Saf (pictured left) has decided to walk away from competitive Fortnite.

Rocco “Saf” Morales is one of the best Fortnite players ever to touch the game. He’s compiled an unrivaled resume across four years while competing at the game’s highest level. Despite what he’s accomplished, Saf announced today that he’s officially retiring from Fortnite.

The news comes as a shock, considering the former Ghost Gaming and TSM member just finished eighth in the Fortnite Champion Series (FNCS) Grand Royale event. Nonetheless, the 19-year-old took to Twitter with the announcement, adding that he hopes to branch into Valorant and content creation.

Saf Retires from Fortnite

Saf posted a Twitlonger, where he explained his reasoning for calling it a career in competitive Fortnite:

“Hey guys just wanted to let you know I won’t be playing/competing/streaming in fortnite anymore. The past few months while playing fortnite made me hate the game so much, not being on an org and getting fucked over by all these orgs just demotivated me to the max. The thought of playing fortnite for any longer just sounds so terrible and I can’t put myself through that anymore.”

He recently brought to light that an organization he was recently a part of — TrainHard Esport — owes him $70K USD. That issue, mixed with his general dissatisfaction with the game’s current state and difficulty signing with an organization, led to his decision. He continued:

“The past 3 years of nonstop grinding finally did me in. I’m thankful for everything the game has done for me but I just can’t force myself to play any longer. I appreciate everyone supporting me thus far and hope you continue to do so.”

Saf’s track record in competitive Fortnite speaks for itself. He’s been involved in the scene since 2018 and has achieved more than most could imagine. Saf won Summer Skirmish week three, Secret Skirmish, ESL Katowice Royale 2019 and FNCS Chapter 2 Season 2.

Three of those four victories occurred alongside his long-time duo partner Williams “Zayt” Aubin. Other achievements include a fourth-place finish at the Fortnite World Cup Finals and qualifying for ten FNCS Season Finals.

The End of an Era & Saf’s Future

Unfortunately, this decision marks the end of an era in the competitive Fortnite scene. It’s a sad day, considering Zayt retired last year. Saf now adds himself to a growing list of players who have chosen to walk away from the iconic Battle Royale title.

Support for Saf’s decision flooded Twitter following the announcement. TSM FTX member Co1azo called the now-retired player “an absolute legend.” Many others echoed a similar sentiment with virtually no one disagreeing.

Saf mentioned in his Twitlonger that he plans to play Valorant and stream consistently in hopes of growing his brand. He did not clarify whether he intends to play Valorant competitively, so Saf’s fans will have to wait and see. We wish the Fortnite icon the best of luck in his future and hope to see him compete again someday.
