Former PlayStation CEO Ponders About Xbox Game Pass Long-Term Sustainability

Published

on

Xbox Game Pass has emerged over the last several years as a new publishing strategy for Microsoft. The subscription service was not exactly the first of its kind, but definitely the first to be done on the scale it has been. The service has been a boon for players, too, as a constant stack of games come and go from the service, not to mention the ever growing slate of first party titles that will remain there forever. But it’s still a new venture, and one that leads to much speculation about just how sustainable a model it is for the future, as pondered by one former CEO of PlayStation.

Speaking with GamesIndustry, former Sony executive Shawn Layden, who served as many different major positions within the platform holder, spoke about a lot of things relating to the current gaming industry. When talking about Game Pass, he expressed some doubt that the service could be sustainable on a long-term basis. He cites the ballooning budgets of game developer as doubt that the service can continue without some changes.

“It’s very hard to launch a $120m game on a subscription service charging $9.99 a month. You pencil it out, you’re going to have to have 500 million subscribers before you start to recoup your investment.

“That’s why right now you need to take a loss-leading position to try to grow that base. But still, if you have only 250 million consoles out there, you’re not going to get to half a billion subscribers. So how do you circle that square? Nobody has figured that out yet.”

Layden’s thought isn’t a new one, by any means, but it’s also something that is difficult to know without some type of inside information. Xbox’s Phil Spencer has been largely dismissive of concerns of sustainability for Game Pass, saying the service is less about numbers of players and more about engagement and overall the revenue from gaming has been in the net positive for Microsoft. What that means for the math Layden is referencing here is simply unknown for anyone outside the office, so to speak, but it’ll be interesting to see what changes come to the service as time goes on.

Kena: Bridge of Spirits Will be Supported “for a While,” Developer Says

Published

on

kena bridge of spirits

Kena: Bridge of Spirits garnered quite a bit of hype in the time since its reveal last year up until its recent launch, and thankfully, it very much lived up to it. Ember Lab’s debut game is a solid action-adventure title with gorgeous visuals and engaging gameplay, and if you liked it as much as so many others have, you’ll probably want more of it. Thankfully, it seems like the developer has every intention of delivering more Kena content.

Speaking in an interview with IGN (which you can view below), when asked about post-launch plans for the game, Ember Lab co-founder Mike Grier said that the studio is going to keep supporting the game “for a while”, and that right now, they’re thinking of adding new features for the photo mode, as well as new content that is focused on combat, which is an area where the game has been getting quite a bit of praise.

“We definitely want to support the game,” Grier said. “We know that people love photo mode and the combat, so we’re thinking about things we do to sort of expand some new combat scenarios, or maybe some additional content in the future featured around combat. We want to make some updates to photo mode. People have been asking for certain features that would be easy to do.

“So yeah, we’ll definitely be supporting Kena for a while. You know, we are definitely a small team, and we’re very excited to see people playing the game and responding to it. So yeah, we’re listening. We’re listening to feedback, listening to what people have to say, and we’ll be here, supporting the game for the next… foreseeable future.”

Given how good Kena: Bridge of Spirits’ base experience it is, there’s no doubt that those who’ve played the game will want more of it, so it’s great to hear its developers say that they do have plans to keep adding to it and improving upon it for a while. How long the wait will be and what shape these updates could take remains to be seen, but Ember Lab has a great foundation to work off of here, so it’s easy to be optimistic about what they’ll come up with next.

Kena: Bridge of Spirits is available on PS5, PS4, and PC, and will also be getting a physical release in November. In our review of the game, we awarded it a score of 8/10, saying, “Kena: Bridge of Spirits delivers an all around excellent experience that’s consistently engaging and manages to enrapture the player, even without doing anything particularly new or innovative.” You can read our full review through here.

Sony is Allegedly Working on a Multiplayer Marvel Game for the PS5

Published

on

marvel logo

The last couple of years have made it abundantly clear that Sony has every intention of leveraging massive Marvel licenses to develop first party exclusive content for PlayStation consoles. Insomniac has already put out a couple of huge successes based on Marvel properties with Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and with Marvel’s Wolverine and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 now in the works, they clearly don’t intend to stop anytime soon.

In fact, it’s possible that Sony may be looking at other Marvel properties as well. In a recent Xbox Era podcast, the site’s co-founder Nick Baker said that according to his sources, Sony is working on another new game based on a Marvel property besides the ones that have always been confirmed, and that, interestingly enough, the new game (which is planned as a PS5 exclusive) will be a multiplayer game.

Baker didn’t go into details about what the property is or what sort of a multiplayer experience the game will be, but he did speculate (and he made it a point to emphasize that this particular bit is purely speculation) that the game could be in the works at Insomniac. We do know that the studio has been hiring for a PS5 multiplayer game, so there’s that.

Of course, whether or not this game really does exist isn’t concrete information right now, and it’s probably going to be a while before Sony says anything about it if it does. Given the success Sony has found with Marvel properties though, we wouldn’t be surprised to see them working on more of them.

Either way, we’ll keep an eye out for new updates, so stay tuned.
