With the increasing importance of data for growing businesses, more and more recruiters are on the lookout for data scientists. Following a certified data science course can be a real career accelerator for people with a scientific background.

In recent years, a growing number of companies have discovered the importance of data. Indeed, all our actions produce a large amount of information that organizations can collect to draw useful conclusions and which they can base strategic decisions. However, when collected, this huge amount of data often comes as raw and unprocessed. Data scientists are then needed to take this raw data, clean it (which means handling invalid values and ensuring it is in a state where it can be analysed) and perform basic analysis on it. Data scientists are also needed to create machine learning models, evaluate them, refine and deploy them. Machine learning models are expressions of an algorithm that will help understand data, find patterns in it and make predictions such as sales trends, for instance.

To become a quality data scientist follow a certified data science course

The best way to become a great data scientist is to follow a certified data science bootcamp! During these courses your goals will be to study a company’s data to determine which data will be extracted and processed, retrieve and analyze relevant data related to the company’s production process, develop predictive models in order to anticipate the evolution of data and trends related to the company’s activities, model results to make them readable, usable and actionable. You will also have the chance to join the data teams and interact with data engineers and data analysts. During a certified data science bootcamp you should cover several main topics including programming and the use of languages and libraries such as Python and Numpy. You will also study how to create great data visualization using Matplotlib, Seaborn and Bokeh. The course should also bring you machine learning skills or how to implement supervised and unsupervised machine learning models. You will also tackle Big Data and how to clean large datasets to make them usable for the rest of the company and be able to analyse them yourself.
Finally, you should learn about Deep Learning and Convolutional Neural Networks, these are a class of artificial neural networks, and are commonly applied to analyse visual imagery and have a variety of applications in Artificial Intelligence.

Even if you don’t have much free time, follow a certified data science course at your own pace

Many training organizations offer flexible formats when it comes to certified data science courses. Joining a course in data science, you will have the choice to opt for a continuous or a boot camp training. Bootcamp trainings are often delivered in a 35 hours per week format, which means you will follow a full time training that should last around 11 weeks. A continuous training, on the other hand, will take you around 10h per week for about 9 months, which will leave you time to pursue your professional duties for the rest of the time. Certified data science courses are often delivered online, which also allows you to follow them from home or wherever you like, making them even more flexible.

Data scientists, rare profiles with highly sought-after skills

It is not a coincidence if the World Economic Forum ranked the data scientist and data analyst positions as the most demanded professions in its Future of Jobs 2020 report. Data scientists are sought after in many industries, but some have greater needs and are ready to offer really attractive salaries. Indeed, data is being used to create massive change in many industries like healthcare, finance, marketing, business and of course cloud computing. Having in-house data experts has therefore become crucial for companies and organizations and many of them are ready to put the price when hiring someone who followed a certified data science course and can bring new skills to the company. As a matter of fact, in Europe, junior data scientists can expect a salary of between 35 000 € and 50 000 €. After 4 years of experience, this salary increases considerably and varies between 50 000 and 65 000 euros. If you live and work in the U.S, this salary will be even higher, think of $74 000 on average, according to Indeed. And if you manage to get a job in one of the GAFAM, multiply this by two at least! The average salary for a data scientist is $152,856 at Google, $145,974 at Apple, $135,360 at Twitter, $134,715 at Facebook, $123,909 at PayPal, $127,852 at Airbnb, and $123,328 at Microsoft. If you decide to go for a job in data and follow a certified data science course, be assured that you can expect a comfortable career.

What if I am not already in a data science career?

No need to hold years of experience in data science or in IT to enter a data science certified course. Many people choosing to join a data science certified course do so while going through a career change. However, it is worth noting that you will find things easier if you hold a school diploma in maths and/or statistics and have good communication skills as well as a good analytical mind. It is indeed likely you will perform better in the course if you hold a bachelor degree in maths or statistics. Although advanced analytics will rather be a task handled by a data analyst, a data scientist will be asked to perform exploratory data analysis and extract meaningful features from data. Once in the job, you will have great chances to be asked to prepare and deliver a presentation, either to your colleagues or to some of your company’s stakeholders.
