FM Update 26 Feb 23: Dealing with Disruption

The last few weeks have been particularly devastating for communities in many parts of the North Island – and my prayerful thoughts are with those affected, particuarly the principals and teachers in schools in the areas most impacted, many of whom are facing weeks and months of uncertainty and repair.
In this newsletter I am sharing a number of links and resources relating to how schools can respond to the things that disrupt our ability to operate in the ways we have been used to.

In this newsletter…

Preparing for Disruption

I’ve recently published a revised version of the Toolkit I released in January titled Empty Seats. At the suggestion of several educators who provided feedback, it now includes a section on extreme weather events and natural disasters.
This publication is a toolkit for use by educators to be better prepared in the event of some of the disruptions we face – the goal being a more resilient approach that allows learning to continue despite the impact  of these disruptions.
The video below explains a little more. For further links and resources also check out the hybrid learning page on the FutureMakers website.
This video provides a brief introduction to the Empty Seats toolbox

Sustaining learning during disruption

Educators from the Te Tai Tokerau Education Community explored a range of ways of engaging with their learners in the midst of disruption in 2022, their stories can be found on the Tai Tokerau Hybrid Project website. I’d really encourage you to take some time to explore the range of different ideas that were explored, and the impact these had on learning for their students. This project includes both primary and secondary school examples.

Learners at the Centre of Change

Grow Waitaha is an initiative that grew out of the response to the earthquakes in Christchurch in 2011. It provides a network of support for schools that puts learners at the centre of change, and provides a wonderful story of a future focused, community response to disruption.
The section containing resources related to monitoring impact on wellbeing and learning may be of particular interest in relation to our response to disruption.

7 ways to support the wellbeing of staff and students

Although written at the beginning of the 2022 school year, the advice in this post from SchoolNews NZ remains relevant.
The seven suggestions address everything from the need to have a well articulated plan for how you will respond to disruptive events, to how to address of students, staff and community throughout.
Lifting hope – Te Matatini
I can’t let the opportunity pass in this newsletter to acknowledge the amazing spectacle of Te Matatini on our screens through last week! In the midst of stories of the difficulties being faced by so many, the sights and sounds of this amazing festival was certainly a bright spot for all to share. It was made even more significant for me when I read the stories of so many of the participants who had overcome seemingly impossible obstacles to make their way to Auckland to perform alongside their iwi . To everyone involved, Ka Rawe!

But wait, there’s more…

At FutureMakers we use a range of forums to curate good ideas and resources. Check out the following…
