Flyr completes first commercial flight

Date:

After months of planning, the Norwegian start-up airline, Flyr successfully operated its first commercial flight, from the county’s capital airport in Oslo to Tromsø Airport (TOS) on Wednesday, June 30th. The airline stated that although phase one of its operations will mainly focus on domestic flights, it hopes to “gradually expand” its network and fleet over the months, but would only do so “in line with demand.”

The Chief Executive of Flyr, Tonje Wikstrøm Frislid of Fly stated that the company had been looking forward to this moment “for a long time.” The CEO added that this inaugural flight would not have been possible without the support from colleagues, the airline’s partners, the airport authorities in addition to its customers.

Yesterday’s flight FS408 was operated by a Boeing 737-800 registered LN-FGB which departed Oslo Airport (OSL) shortly after 11:30 am local time. According to planespotter.net, the Boeing 737-800 is roughly eight years old, featuring an all-economy cabin and has a total seating capacity for 189 passengers.

Flyr also operated a new route from Oslo Airport (OSL) to Bodø Airport (BOO) on Thursday, July 1st. Flight FS507 was operated by the carrier’s other Boeing 737-800 which is registered LN-FGA.

In a company statement, the Minister of Transport and Communications, Knut Arild Hareide said “This is a new airline, but they already have the most important prerequisites. They have a lot of talented employees who have extensive experience in this industry.”

The new startup airline is also looking to expand its route network and its fleet over the coming months. The Norwegian airline stated that it plans to serve a “number of Norwegian cities” including a selection of European destinations such as Malaga, Alicante and Nice. A preliminary schedule seen by AeroNewsX states that Flyr’s first three international routes could commence as early as the 21st of August.

The low-cost carrier has stated that it hopes to have about 350 employees by the end of this year while in terms of aircraft, the carrier plans to have a fleet of at least 28 aircraft, which will most likely be comprised of Boeing 737s.

The airline added that it has the flexibility to scale up the production if necessary and will have a competitive cost level in comparison to local competitors such as Norwegian Air Shuttle, Scandinavian Airlines and Widerøe.
