Filmmakers’ home sets stage for new Elwood record

Date:

6 Dickens St, Elwood, could break the suburb’s record.

Filmmaker Martin McKenna and his philanthropist wife Deborah Barlow are closing the curtain on their stunning Elwood home, which is a contender for the suburb’s most expensive sale.

The opulent Victorian at 6 Dickens St was built about 1891 and features extensive gardens, a formal sitting room, five luxurious bedrooms, a sitting or music room with gold wallpaper and an office or library.

Ornate arched walkways and decorative wall details are present throughout.

Meanwhile a modern extension at the back includes an open-plan living and dining space with high ceilings and a stone-look fireplace, a kitchen and butler’s kitchen and a wall-length stacker-door that opens onto an impressive decking area with a fireplace.

A cellar, a gym, a sauna, a pool, a grassed basketball area and a three-car garage are also part of the property package.

If sold at its $10.5m asking price the elegant home could break the suburb’s house price record of $9.4m, which was set by 31 Ormond Esplanade last year, CoreLogic records show.

The property’s listing describes it as the “pinnacle of Victorian opulence”.

It states the home was originally built for St Kilda’s then-mayor and is named ‘Trefusis’ after author and English socialite Violet Trefusis.

The couple sold an investment property in St Kilda at 32 Acland St for $1.58m in 2017.
