FAR: Changing Tides Casts Off At the Beginning of March

Date:

FAR: Changing Tides

FAR: Changing Tides, a sequel of sorts to FAR: Lone Sails now has a release date and will be setting sail this March.

We first learnt of this follow-up back in June, when it was revealed at June’s PC Gaming Show, though it was then pencilled in for a late 2021 release date. Like the original, it casts you as a lone traveller guiding a ship across an all but dead world.

While Lone Sails had you traversing a dried out ocean bed in a wheeled vehicle, Changing Tides has you above (and sometimes below) the waves, roaming a flooded realm. However, there’s another significant difference and that’s that the story was written before work began on the game.

“Hang on,” you might be thinking, “Isn’t that the way it’s normally done?” Definitely not, we’ve seen an awful lot of games where the story was clearly an afterthought. Lone Sails does have a story, but as creative lead Don Schmocker explains on PlayStation Blog, “we found ourselves defining and building elements of the story throughout development, which became increasingly difficult.”

Starting with a story in mind has, according to Schmocker, has given FAR: Changing Tides a better sense of direction, creating environments that serve the narrative instead of the other way around. You can explore this waterlogged world for yourself when FAR: Changing Tides is released this March 1st, sailing onto PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Switch.
