Evil Geniuses sign Goldenglue for one week contract

Date:

Evil Geniuses have signed mid-laner Greyson “Goldenglue” Gilmer, according to the Riot Games global contract database. This news comes just a few weeks into the 2020 League of Legends Championship Series (LCS) Summer Split, which has Evil Geniuses, Counter Logic Gaming, and Fly Quest currently tied for 4th.

Goldenglue to Evil Geniuses

The former Golden Guardians player transitioned to the team’s Academy roster, after being benched for former Dignitas mid laner Tanner Damonte. Academy stated that he would compete for the spot with Nicholas “Ablazeolive” Abbott.

Unfortunately, things did not seem to work out. After a few days of scrimmages, the team subsequently released him on July 3. With this update, Goldenglue entered free agency for the first time in four years. He also made clear his interest to join a team in a coach position.

Instead, sources have told ESPN that he will sign with Evil Geniuses for a one-week contract. The 23-year-old will be on the Evil Geniuses starting roster for Week 6 of the LCS, alongside Academy top-laner Heo “Huni” Seung-hoon. These two players will replace Daniele “Jiizuke” di Mauro and Colin “Kumo” Zhao temporarily, with Jiizuke giving up his international player slot for Huni.

Competing for contract extension

Evil Geniuses ended the 2020 LCS Spring Split in 2nd, with a 3rd place finish at the Spring Playoffs after a loss to FlyQuest. The North American esports organization has maintained the same lineup, but has struggled in recent weeks. Depending on the performance of Goldenglue and Huni on the main roster, a contract extension for the former may be on the table.

Evil Geniuses will play against Team Liquid and Cloud9 during Week 6 of the Summer Split. While this change in the roster may not make much of a difference against two of the top teams in the LCS, only time will tell.
