Everything you need to know about the 2021 Mid-Season Invitational

Published

on

The Mid-Season Invitational is back after a year hiatus. But this time, there’s more than just glory on the line for the best teams in League of Legends.

On March 30, Riot Games introduced a new format for this year’s event, giving teams more of an incentive to perform on the international stage.

The event has often provided fans with a good indication of the strongest region leading up to the World Championship in September. But Worlds has always been the game’s premier tournament, writing the best headlines, awarding the biggest prize pools, and offering the most speculator venues.

In the past, some teams haven’t taken MSI as seriously as other events. European giants G2 Esports notoriously went on “vacation” instead of preparing for MSI in 2016. The team dropped out of the tournament with a 2-8 record, resulting in backlash from the community.

This year in Reykjavík, Iceland, there’s no excuse. Riot’s new format and prize structure make sure of that.

Format

Riot is doing away with the play-in stage this year and splitting all 12 regions into four tiers based on the results of the last two years of international tournaments.

1: China (LPL), Europe (LEC), Korea (LCK)

2: North America (LCS), Vietnam (VCS), Southeast Asia (PCS)

3: Turkey (TCL), CIS (LCL), LATAM (LLA)

4: Japan (LJL), Brazil (CBLOL), Oceania (LCO)

The result is three groups, which Riot’s global director of operations Tom Martell drew “utilizing software to ‘randomly’” assign the teams. The qualifying team from each region will be based on results from the regular season playoffs.

The event will be split into three separate stages this year. In the group stage, the top two teams from each group will proceed following a best-of-one double round-robin. In the “rumble” stage, the top four teams will advance after another best-of-one double round-robin. And finally, in the knockout stage, the winner will be decided after a single-elimination, best-of-five series semifinals, and grand finals.

Schedule

Once the final teams are determined in April, they will meet in Reykjavík, Iceland, for the first day of the event on May 6. MSI will run over the course of a two-week period, ending with the finals on May 22.

Prize

This year, the winner’s league will receive an additional regional team spot at Worlds.

After the event concludes in May, the final “global power rankings” for the 2021 season will be calculated based on a number of variables. The highest-ranking league will then get an additional slot (unless that region has also won MSI). In that scenario, the slot will then pass down to the second-highest-ranking league in the power rankings.

Season 9 MSI Season 9 Worlds Season 10 Worlds Total points
LCS 2 0 0 2
LEC 4 12 12 28
LPL 1 20 28 49
LCK 1 8 40 49

As it currently stands, according to the point system Riot introduced in 2017, the LPL and LCK are tied for first place with 49 points apiece. This year’s MSI will award eight points to the winners, four for the runner-up, and two to each of the semifinalists.

This means, if the LPL qualifies for the semifinals, the region will be guaranteed an extra slot at Worlds. If either the LCK or the LPL wins the tournament, though, the LCK will get another slot. The LCS or LEC (or any other region for that matter) will have to win MSI to ensure a fourth spot at Worlds.

Will New World be released on console?

Published

on

Amazon Games’ new MMORPG, New World, is set to release on Sept. 28. The long-awaited game will finally launch after several delays in both the alpha and beta testing periods, and players will have the ability to explore the world of Aeternum to its fullest extent after a lengthy development process.

But while many prospective New World players anticipate the title’s launch, others will look to experience the game on their console. Unfortunately for those users, New World will not be available to play on any current and viable generation of gaming consoles. Ahead of the game’s imminent launch, Amazon Games has explicitly stated New World will only be available to play on PC.

Will New World ever be released on console?

Amazon Games has said on repeated occasions New World will not be available to play on consoles, and that the studio has no intentions of developing a console version for the game at this time. As recently as July 2021, Amazon Games stated New World would only be available on PC at launch.

Traditionally, games in the MMORPG genre have mainly been played on PC, but a few have been ported over to consoles in recent years to reach a wider audience. Titles like Final Fantasy XIV, Path of Exile, and The Elder Scrolls Online, for example, were given full-scale console releases. New World, however, will only be available on PC for the time being, and perhaps in the extended future.

New World launches on Sept. 28 through the Steam client. Steam codes for the game can alternatively be purchased via Amazon.

How to watch today’s ALGS Pro League qualifiers

Published

on

A broadcast of preseason qualifiers for the top tier of the North American Apex Legends circuit is scheduled for later today. Several prominent streamers and pros, like Jack “NiceWigg” Martin and Timmy “iiTzTimmy” An, will look to earn their place in the Apex Pro League with a win.

The competition in North America’s final rounds of qualifying begins at 8pm CT. It will be streamed by GameTime, as well as by many of the players on their own Twitch channels. GameTime’s stream will feature commentary from casters Josh Howard and Rafael “DiA” Ruiz.

Today’s competition marks the end of the second of four preseason qualifiers for the Apex teams that weren’t lucky enough to receive an invite to the pro league of the Apex Legends Global Series (ALGS). These preseason qualifiers, played out over four tournaments before the start of the ALGS regular season, will determine which teams will round out the pro league lobbies.

The winners of the qualifiers in each region gain automatic entry into the pro league, where they’ll play for their share of the $5 million ALGS prize pool. Sixteen other teams that didn’t notch a win in the qualifiers will still make the cut for the pro league based on strong performances throughout the four preseason tournaments, while the rest of the pool will be relegated to the second-tier Challengers circuit.

There were some notable snubs among the invites to the Apex Pro League in North America. Five-time ALGS winner Ryan “ImMadness” Schlieve, who was recently let go from CLG, didn’t receive an invite, for example. His new squad, known as BenchWarmers, had an easy time of it in the beginning rounds of the qualifiers but struggled later this weekend as the competition grew more fierce. The team, rounded out by XSET’s Beau “RamBeau” Sheidy and Cloud9’s Logan “Knoqd” Layou, barely squeaked into the finals. Only 10 teams advanced from the semifinals and they came in 10th place.

NiceWigg, another ex-CLG player, has qualified for the finals with his teammates iiTzTimmy and Apryze. Both NiceWigg and iiTzTimmy are prominent content creators in the Apex scene with over 1.5 million Twitch followers between them. But this is a new, untested team and the qualifying lobbies haven’t been a walk in the park.

Both teams will look to win tonight’s finals outright, which would give them a bye through the rest of the qualifiers and cement their place in the pro league regular season, which begins on Oct. 16.

How to add a lurk command on Twitch

Published

on

A lurk command is a simple addition to your stream that you can add on any streaming software of your choice. The command allows non-active audience members, often called lurkers, a way to show they are still supporting the stream despite their inactivity.

You can set up your lurk command in just a few simple steps. First, open up your streaming platform and go to your bot. Make sure your bot is properly enabled and modded. If it is not already set up, go to your chat and input /mod followed by your bot. This will depend on your OBS of choice; for example if you are using Streamlabs you should type /mod Streamlabs or /mod Nightbot.

Go back to your bot in the OBS and select the Commands tab. From here, select the Add Commands option. Once again, using Streamlabs for an example, you would select Commands, then Custom and finally Add Command.

In the Command section, you can add your !lurk command and customize what you would like the text response to the command to be. You can change the details around the command further by setting who can use it and how often the response is triggered.

Finally, all you have to do is hit confirm and the settings will be saved and ready to use in chat. When the changes are applied, anytime a chatter types “!lurk”, your custom message will appear saying something along the lines of “I see you lurking, [Chatter’s name].” Of course, your message is entirely up to you and can be an extension for your channel’s brand or community.

While not every chatter may be able to actively engage with the stream at all times, a large majority still want to show their support. The lurk command not only provides audiences a way to communicate their support but gives the streamer another opportunity to add personality to the broadcast by adding a custom command that also promotes audience recognition.
